I remember the silver sixpence, Shiney, I can't say I remember the silver thrupence. The octagonal Thrupenny bit is one l, as a kid, I remember, in fact it was my favourite coin. I remember one of my Granddad's, who always smoked a pipe and wore his flatcap indoors, used to make his own Christmas Pudding and bring it to our house for Christmas dinner. You'd have to be careful eating it because he always put silver sixpences in the Pudding!!

I have an 1843 Half Farthing, they were minted as that was the standard price of a Loaf of Bread.

So a pound would have bought you 1920 loaves of bread. If you think about it like that, todays pound is only worth half a farthing.[hr]
Think I had a Maundy Groat as a pet when I was a kid.

      ARMANDII,
They were producing the silver thrupence right up until the middle of WWII.

The cupronickel one was produced between WWI and WWII and continued into the 50's (I think). These remained in circulation until decimalisation in 1971.

Ziggy, what did you do on the other days of the week? :heehee:

I've seen silver thrupeny bits but mostly from pre second WW, I only actually remember brass, (is that cupronickel twelve sided ones), in circulation in my lifetime.
If so I'm sure they were still being minted right into the 60s.

Its a pet you can only have on a Thursday.

Don't think the Half Farthing is worth a lot, but its the only thing my Grandad ever gave me apart from an empty old holborn tin (still got that too)

Only thing my other Grandad ever gave me was a tin of ball bearings.

There was a silver sixpence & that was what was in your pudding:thumbsup:

Bad luck to use the silver 3pence.

I made a ring in metalwork at School. Drilled out the middle of a pre 1921 2 bob bit.(sterling silver)

Bent it round so that the inscription was on the inside, fid def,1921, emperor of india and all that stuff.

Silver soldered it together & chamfered it off to look like an engagement ring

Brilliant, Marley! Seeing those coins brings it all back. I've got a collection of old pennies, half pennies, threepenny bits, half crowns which I never seem to get the time to reminisce over!

Thanks, Ziggy, I was having doubts about that. Good old Granddad!!. My wife had a ring made out of a half-crown and I always wondered how it was done, now I know!
