The glass top on our patio table was icy at 2am this morning... It was 1°C at 7am after a clear sky, and I'm expecting similar tonight. it is spitting with rain, that should keep the frost away should it continue...

-1C last night in North Yorkshire. A solid frost on the car that took some removing this morning - but no obvious damage to the plants. Dahlia imperialis now has 4 blooms and seems to be unaffected.

It felt very cold earlier this evening, so did an emergency operation in the dark to put some Cannas, Bananas and Gingers into their winter quarters - upstairs in the third bedroom under a couple of fluorescent tubes.

Air and ground frost - I have just had a Google here http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/learning/frost/types-of-frost

Whilst it didn't say so - I think that the ground (and this includes car bodies) cools first, to give a ground frost, as heat is lost by radiation especially on a clear night. Then if the ground gets cold enough for long enough it transfers some of that cold to the air and you then get an air frost.

So I think a ground frost comes first, and this is then followed by an air frost.

Bye bye Dahlias until next year. Frost last night and very cold again now, gorgeous day in between, can't complain tho. Been very mild here until 2 days ago. 1000s of Snowdrops are emerging so hoping they don't decide to flower soon (don't think they will) as I like them to herald Spring and this definitely isn't just round the corner!

Yesterday morning we had our first 'proper' frost, car frozen up and ice on the roof tops as well as some on the ground in sheltered spots, temperature at dawn was +0.8 degrees :)

Today there was a bit of ice on the cars again but it melted immediately once the sun came up :)

First air frost here last night, my weather station recorded an overnight minimum of -1C.

It finished off the begonias I've got in pots near the house, didn't get the nasturtiums nearby though. :dunno:

We had our first frost here too this morning - totally unexpected but luckily didn't do any damage.

Still haven't had a frost yet, although that may change, the BBC is forecasting a widespread frost for Tuesday evening.
