Not hundreds, no. First of all, I wondered what the problem was. It was only when I unfurled the growing tip/leaf that I spotted a caterpillar scurrying away, that the cause became apparent. I've never had this problem before.

      Hi Wiseowl,

Delta's Sarah is a beautiful fully hardy bush.

It would grow well in either situation, however........

It may be possible to plant it in the garden now, but they need a good 3 months to firmly establish themselves with a new root system and send a tap root down deep. ( This is why you never see bare-root Fuchsias like Roses and other shrubs ).
Obviously, you know what your Autumn/Winters, and growing conditions are like better than anyone else. If you feel that you can offer it growing time up until around about November then go for it :)
If you look at post no's 138/139 ( or there abouts ) on this thread I've put up some instructions how to plant them which virtually guarantees success.
One of the main reasons for losses of hardy Fuchsias over the Winter is that they're planted at soil level like other plants whereas their crowns need to be between 3 and 5 inches deep.

In the case of the terracotta pot, again, how deep is it as in this instance you could plant it at soil level for now ( but around 5/6" down), and then top up later, say in about 2 month time when it starts to lose it's lower leaves. Also, with my hardys in pots to be kept out during the Winter I line the inside with bubble wrap.

Then there is the option of putting her in the pot and moving her inside if that is at all possible.

One other thing to remember is never to prune a hardy Fuchsia ( you can however just take the soft tips ( around 2/3" usually ) off,and also the leaves that are still left on the plant as it is through these that the frost enters the plants system ) before Winter as the bare stems help protect the crown.

      Hope this has helped :)

Anyone got any idea of the name of Fuchsia below. I know it is hard as there are so many.
It is a Bush and is a about 18" (460 mm) high by about 2 feet (610 mm) wide.Bit hard to see but the flower is large, about 2 3/4" across (70 mm). The Sepal is Pink with a darker red/Pink Petals. Thanks

            Hi Trogre,

The details are on post no's 337 and 338 on this thread, around the 23/24th July.

Your pic is " Celia Smedley ".

A fully hardy bush type down to - 10 deg C, an English introduction from 1970.

In my opinion it's one of the nicest hardys because of it's unusual colouring.

                Hi Wiseowl,

                I don't think you'll be disappointed.
It really is an excellent book, not just a " plant book ". If you're anything like me you won't be able to put it down once you start reading it.

I wish that other plantsmen/ women would bring their books out like this one.

                Hope you enjoy :)
