No flowers at the moment @Anthony Rogers, can`t make my mind up wether to leave in the pots 1 ltre, over winter or get them in the ground asap, as both pots marked hardy perennials,

                        image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg Good evening people.
My Fuchsias are now on the turn and are losing their flowers. These are the ones from previous post from Wilcos. They were the tiny plug plants that I couldn't believe how well they did. The plants were 'supposedly' Winston Churchill and Dollar princess. Also have Harry Gray and Matt Busby in pots. A few more too but can't recall names at moment.

So, the question is.... What do I do with them now or in the not too distant future? I have some polythene and fleece cloches that I was thinking of using for covering but don't know if this is the right idea? Would also like to know if I should leave them as they are (1st year and about 18" high) in their pots, or crop them?
I am loving these Fuchsias and want to add more varieties next year. However, I'm clueless on the best way to proceed, so as usual am relying on you wonderful people for guidance.

Thanks in advance, people. Have a good one.

Hi All. Sort of following on from rustler. My wife asked me about taking cuttings but I told her they are still in flower and I have come to believe do not take cuttings from shoots that have flowers on. She then replied some shoots have no flowers but only the seed pod left can cuttings be taken from that shoot, I had no idea so hoping for some advice.

Rustler, I am sure you will get better detailed advice from more experienced members but basically....

Before the frosts come so I suppose around start of November depending where you live take any non hardy fuchsias inside a shed, garage or somewhere where it will not get frosty. When I put mine in garage I do not put fleece around them but in cold greenhouse or even shed I tend to wrap fleece around them Not over them.

They must be pruned down if only to make more room. I tend to prune them to about 1/2 the height only. Come spring you prune them down more severely to promote strong healthy growth otherwise you will get a weak bush growing. There are plenty of web sites with pictures to show you how hard to prune them.

Personally I prune 1/2 length as stated them when I see buds coming in spring I prune down to the lowest bud and never had any problems.

If you have any hardy fuchsias you are going to leave outside again prune down a bit to stop wind damage and any frost that attack tips of stems. A good covering at the base with a few inches of old compost, bark, anything to stop frost penetrating to roots.

Rusler. Since you have a good few healthy fuschias I would strongly suggest have a go at taking cuttings.Believe me when I say they are one of the easiest plants to take cuttings from. Again tons of advice will come your way and loads on the web.I plant my cuttings in small 50mm plastic pots in wilko cutting compost, but riddled. Some I have dipped in rooting hormone some not and cannot say one is better than the other. I found by far the best way to bring them on is as Anthony R advised me,on a windowsill, mine face EES and do fine during winter. This season just gone I tried 3 different ways to propagate cuttings and the window sill was by far the best.

I tend to leave cutting tip in water overnight before putting in pots. I read that it helps the cutting take up water and gives it more chance of surviving, perhaps this is wrong???
Do not over water cuttings but let them really dry out before watering otherwise small roots will drown and rot. Again I read and I tend to follow is to let leave just start to loose its shine which means it is dry and then water.
This is my way but I am always learning as we all are.

Hi@ Trogre. Thank you for your advice. I will do as suggested and will try some cuttings. There will be space on Dads balcony so the cuttings will be good out there. Looking forward to some new species for next season. Wish the garden was bigger. Haha!

Exactly what I was looking for too! My wilko plugs disappeared, we had crap weather just after a good spell and I had planted them out, glad yours came through brilliantly for you though Rustler
