Fuchsias - 2016

Thank you Michael but I'm temporarily without a garden, so no shed or garage either.

 

Oh dear. Sorry to hear that. I don't know what to tell you, but I would bring them into the house (with all my other plants )
I used to live in an old cottage once upon a time, and then I used to take the fuchsias up the attic every winter
The ceilings were low so it was easy.

I hope you can save them.

 

Not a problem, I've relocated to Scotland and the cottage I'm renting temporarily doesn't have a garden. I think you're right, I'll have to bring them in, thank you.

So do I @Michael Hewett, thanks for asking. The temperature went down to -3C last night and we had a sprinkling of snow so that made my mind up to bring them in this morning. The soil on the top of the pots was like rock. They're now sitting comfortably in the shower room.

 

I'm pleased to hear they are all right @Sheal As long as all the soil didn't freeze solid they should recover.
I hope the snow clears soon for you.

@Michael Hewett On mine I removed most of the leaves and at present they are in a
unheated greenhouse (in their own little 3 inch pot) we are in the south east and whilst we do get frost it's not very often..........we have a conservatory, which at a push I could use, but there's already loads of plants in there, do you think the unheated greenhouse will be ok, or should I be bringing them in?

As far as I can remember in the past 20 years or so, none of the compost in the pots has frozen in the greenhouse even with the door open a bit to let the cats in and out........I fitted a cat flap to the greenhouse but they cant seem to work out how to use it!!

 

Your greenhouse sounds as if it's in a sheltered spot @intel , because you say the compost never freezes. If so, I should think they'd be all right this winter again, although you never know how cold it's going to get later on.
Sometimes with mine, the top of the soil will freeze, but it doesn't seem to do them any harm. I think many varieties are tougher than we think.
Other varieties not so.

You could cover them with fleece or newspaper sheets as an extra precaution, if you like. It wouldn't do any harm, but if you do that, try to take it off sometimes to allow for ventilation.

Mine are in a perspex shelter at the side of the garage. I close the door to stop it getting too cold, although it is very sheltered there.
(The cat sleeps in the house - very pampered !) I never put heat with them so it's like an unheated greenhouse really, but I do cover them over, and I put them under the staging.

 

Not hardy.. can't remember what it's called. Kept in a porch, have been watering very little and it's not too warm in there, max about 12c. What's happening? It has hardly any leaves but lots of flower buds?!



This is the other one I'm over wintering. Lots of leaves no buds.. which is what I would have expected?
