I have a hardy shrub Fuchsia [Mrs Popple] down at the bottom of the garden which I always forget to prune until about now. I've never had a problem with any die back over the last 20 years even when the temperature was well below zero as they appear to be very hardy.:coffee::snorky:

Also found Mrs Popple to be extremely hardy and long lasting eg 30 years +

Generally I cut out / down any lengthy stems at the end of the autumn flowering to avoid root rock / look tidy etc.

This year all my outside pots and in the ground fuchsias are now breaking leaf.

How much you prune down is really down to how big you want the plant to grow this year.

Even if woody looking stems have no sign of buds yet, you can always check if they are alive by running your nail down 10mm of it so the bark is removed.
If its an obvious green underneath then its alive and will propably bud soon.

I would not hesistate about pruning to the desired size /shape now, and I'm up in the Pennine hills; done mine already. If any sharpe frost nipped the yound leaves , feel sure they would soon send out new ones; they seem very tough to weather and man !

For a change, I planted a couple of Lady Boothby ' climbers ' last year, got to 6Ft, very fast growers, masses of flowers , survived this mild winder with no problems.
Also trying out its sister plant this year , Pink Fizz

Anybody got a hardy Falklands or Pam Plack?? Thinking of buying both of them but they may be just too small at 60cm.

Good to hear from you, trogue, and maybe in the "Fuchsia" we'll remember to prune at at the right time:heehee:

Hi All. Many years ago I purchased 3 x fuchsia triphylla in if I can remember 7cm pots. Left them to harden off and re potted them in large 20cm pots and they all died!!
I am pretty sure it was the re potting into large pots which killed them but not sure.

Any way would like to have another go so the question is are they in fact any harder to grow than the normal fuchsia? What got my interest again was Triphylla Eruption which can be grown in pot or hanging basket. The picture below is of Eruption.
There must be more varieties of Triphylla out there which members grow so any pointers & photos would be great. Many Thanks

Have had the more common Triphylla Thalia growing for the last couple of years without any problems.

One is in a 30cm pot outdoors in the summer and it is covered with masses of flowers, almost covering all the leaves.

Having all three of your plants dying off when you repotted them, sounds more like diseased plants as supplied or a sudden overnight frost as seems they cannot withstand any ..?

Did you look at their roots as Vine Weevil grubs could have been the problem.

Am no expert, but I'd say get some more, and keep protected until all frosts have gone.

Also take some cuttings from them so you always have some in reserve; they should root quickly in this mild weather, though some gentle heat might help.

Tender, trailing fucshias - can they be over-wintered somehow? Even if it means bringing them into the house and cutting them back?

Am only a novice with greenhouse Fuchsias but this might help.

Have a dozen or so different varieties including tender trailers like VooDoo and Thalia etc and they have all survived the winter in the greenhouse.
The older plants kept many of their leaves though winter, but they have now dropped in favour of new buds.
I have cut them back by about 50% , mainly to clean out any thin branches /retain a good shape.

The greenhouse is frost free heated by an accurate heater /temp sensor /min-max display and never drops below 3c, even when outsides been down -5c in January.

Bringing them into the house then think are likey to continue to grow as believe they are more of a plant that relies on warmth rather than just light length... ?

Somewhere like an unheated bedroom thats unlikely to freeze or easy to put in a small electric heater with a frost setting for the odd night it does go very low; though do you get many frosts that far south ??

First flowers of the year for me.

Shrimp Cocktail (hardy) but over wintered in frost free greenhouse, been outside for 3 weeks now.
