I never realised that the petrol used in Scotland all came from North Sea oil.
Many years ago when it all started we were told that the oil from the N. sea was a different grade and would not lower the cost of petrol as it will be used for different purposes.

Now it seems that most of Scotland and N. England is run on N. sea oil, so what do the rest of us use?
All I can say is, its cheaper so perhaps you should be using it up there.
If they are not careful the oil men will go the same way as the miners in the eighties, if your not reliable these days you go under, alternatives can be found, even if we have to go "cap in hand" to Russia.

The loss of tax revenue will see to that.

One sure reason why costs are higher -

    Costs and profit.

The market is much smaller here in Scotland and is spread over a wide area. Nearly 60 million (50.7 million) people live in England but Scotland has a population of about one tenth of this at 5.1 million.
The 5 million people in Scotland are very much more spread out â?? they occupy 78,313 square kilometres whereas Englandâ??s 60 million are spread over 130,396 square kilometres This equates to 385 people per square km in England but only 65 in the same area in Scotland. In fact once you move away from the small central belt and main centres of population on the east coast the population density in the highlands and islands is only 8 people per square kilometre.

What this means for garages selling fuel is that their sales are relatively smaller therefore they have to increase prices in order to maintain a decent profit. And more importantly for garages in remote highland areas the costs of buying in supplies are VASTLY greater due to the distance the tankers have to travel to supply just a few garages.

Can't say that I like the higher prices here, but I understand why they are higher. There's always the chance that the Scottish Parliament will nationalise the Scottish (whose oil is it?:)) oilfields.
    Then who'll be smiling:D:D

There is always a loser and you know it is the consumer. Fuel price doesn't just affect your travel - it affects the food you buy too.

Dave W, I'm supprised its not been classified as EC oil.
Afterall the fish out there have been.
I've never actually understood why the other countries bordering the North sea dont claim a share anyway.
If we moved the pipeline a bit futher south and brought it ashore in England, we could then claim it as English oil:D
