Getting back to tying up cordylines, dont like the idea because it has the opposite effect of keeping the growing point dry, it actually holds in the moisture and causes rotting.
Keeping dry is a good idea but tieing up the leaves doesn't do that, in my experience.
Unless you are able to untie during mild dry spells.

I bow to your experience on that, @pete :) I don't do anything to mine but it's just a plain green, seed-raised one so not as tender as the coloured varieties. As @longk said, bubble wrap (or in my case, multicouche foil/fleece 17-layer roof insulation) is a better bet if you need to keep tender plants dry. I wrap in fleece to absorb any condensation, then the waterproof overcoat. Stop/start springs are definitely more tricky than winter as the sun can be quite strong even in February and March, so you unwrap but then it turns cold again.....:wallbanging: Great big clear plastic dustbins would be the ideal solution!

Thanks all for you input on this , I am a lot wiser and a little confused - quite normal for me .
I'll follow Petes guidelines of no tie up and fleece cover in winter cold spells . Both Cordies are in a sheltered spot and covered with a double layer of fleece. Next week night temps are up to 5°c so I'll uncover then but keep an eye on the forecast. :dbgrtmb:

Is it pretty Arctic up your way at the moment @HarryS ?
Must admit although we are just getting "normal" type lows at the moment it does sound much colder in some parts.
So some extra wrapping might be a good Idea if you are getting below zero days and lower than minus 5 at night.

I bottled it last night. Everything in pots that may be pushing it went under cover or next to the house. I had to move a few to my dads greenhouse as well. I ran out of time as far as finishing bubble wrapping his greenhouse so I improvised..............

That's fleece, heavy bubble wrap and some packaging material over the top.
Kennedia nigricans was outdoors all last winter but last night it went under cover with wrapping............

Even my woodworking shed got pressed into service..............

Pete we get pretty mild winters in West Lancashire , although just gone through a cold spell where it hit -6°c on Monday. Probably nothing like the low temps @longk will get in Oxfordshire . While travelling through there I have never seen haw frost like it , must be an inch thick !
Also my plant cover is nothing like as comprehensive as Longks.

For anyone interested in the extra thick bubble wrap that I use manufacturer approved car bodyshops are a good source. Car bumpers are generally delivered in this stuff when using genuine parts and as we know modern bumpers have got large so they are good sized sheets. Although it is not completely transparent it does allow a pretty good degree of light through.

Thanks! Now it is common knowledge that I have a complete lack of class!
Not that I'm proud, I also have some with Honda on it and some with Audi too.

There probably is as RR and Bentley are a large part of what we do. There is also a fair bit of Merc stuff as I specialize in classic Mercs.

The ice blocks have almost melted now which is more than can be said about the pavements.
