I turned the ad blocker off on here, seeing as this forum's not run by a big business. Seems someone thinks I need a new car :dunno: mine's only 8 years old.

My target adds are pretty spot on.

I do need a 2 Bedroom Detached Bungalow, I just don't have the money to pay for it.

The BBC must have allowed the forum or whoever owns it to use the wording BBC and therefore the BBC would have considered that the forum and anything it does could be linked to them

i am very disappointed with the forum closing and i also think it reflects badly on the BBC

If you have spent time working abroad, you really value the BBC, as do many of the locals in the worlds trouble spots, who find it the most impartial source of news. I would not be without it.

On the GW forum there was a post in which people recommended TV programmes they were enjoying. About 80% were from the BBC. And it is not just TV, there is a rich variety of radio programmes and my world would certainly be poorer without Radio 4 and the wonderful podcasts. Do other countries have anything approaching quality of this kind?

The corporation’s educational remit is amply met by the wonderful Bitesize programmes as well as brilliant documentaries covering every aspect of life.

Above all we are offered journalism of the highest standards. Our status in the world is enhanced by the BBC’s reputation for impartiality and precision. It might be hard to quantify but it is most definitely soft power.

It is easy to malign the BBC but I am a staunch advocate and value immensely the joy it brings me.

At one stage in my life I had the need to be very economical with my outgoings for a few years and a tv licence was an unnecessary expense. I put the tv in the back of the wardrobe and removed it’s plug. I lived on my own most of that time in an area where it wasn’t possible for me to have a social life. I’d have been so lonely without BBC radio. :star:

I must admit I spend a lot of time listening to BBC Sounds rather than watching TV.

I cancelled my TV licence last year as neither of us hardly watched anything. Most programmes do not appeal. We listen to the radio in the evening and to be honest, don't miss television at all.

We have never had a TV. However we do use the internet and watch on iPlayer so now we have to have a TV licence.

The BBC is so over hyped frankly, a great example of British exceptionalism that everything on this island is so very special and better than anywhere else. Most of the time a weird byproduct of low level jingoism.

I find their TV News bulletins unwatchable too much editorialising and not enough insight. I have switched to Channel 4's evening news bulletin for the last two years and it's a whole lot fresher and frankly with a more international outlook. Their coverage of stories in Africa in unmatched to other UK channels. And their interviewing of politicians is a lot more factual and probing.

Also recently the BBC tried to closed down a number of their orchestras showing how little they understand of what's still good of their offering. Their classical and opera provision on radio is still of a high standard but as the management behaves more like a commercial entity they look lost.

The younger generations are spending a whole lot more time on YouTube (I'm 45 and definitely spend more time on YouTube than BBC TV) and streaming services the iPlayer hasn't got much to attract them. They even removed the ability to download programmes to devices recently because not enough people were wishing it.

I actually find the BBC very bias especially where politics are concerned and I'm fuming what they have done with regional radio shows especially the gardening shows:mad:
I can't understand why they got rid of our local very popular presenters.Yessss I know times change but surely the stats are proving to be wrong .Re gardening , I have always listened to not only my local gardening programes but Radio Norfolk and Radio Kent and others uninterrupted with music...but now all we get is a half hearted attempt from the Beeb ..bit of gardening and shed loads of music..I love music but I can listen to music any time...They've lost the plot and many listeners .

I cancelled ours a few years ago - the absolute tripe on most channels is frankly insulting to intelligence.
I've got the goons visiting this week to 'check whether I need a license', yet the council haven't been harassing me incase I'm slyly flogging veg without a traders' license..
The beeb could save money and a lot of paper there...
There are thousands of great documentaries, news channels, concerts etc online, and I refuse to pay money to an institution which considers a dance/cookery programme to be 'news', apart from anything else.

My brother had a lot of bother from the licence checking people. He found out that they are contracted private companies whose aim is to get you to pay whether you need to or not. He let them in thinking that it would be a once only check. He obviously had no T.V., but the fact that he had a laptop was their excuse to suggest that he “must” be watching live t.v. They basically said to my brother, “if you don’t pay we’re going to keep coming back. We won’t give up”. They get paid by results (getting the money), not for confirming that you don’t require a licence. I know the rules say that watching on catchup is ok, and watching recorded things is OK, but they aren’t interested in that. Maybe things have improved since then (this was about 10 years ago). I would be inclined to research my rights in advance - there’s bound to be loads of info available on this by now.
