A TV licence costs £13 a month and I think it’s the best money I ever spend.

      Totally agree, @BenCotto.

When people in the war zones I worked in wanted to know what the rest of the world thought about their situation, it was BBC World Service they all wanted to watch.

Nothing has changed, they're still trickster salesmen. I know exactly what the rules are, and I keep on top of these things.

I absolutely agree … but if spending another £13 a month is the difference between being able to follow Micawber’s Principle and not, then I chose not to spend it.

Just had a look in my spam folder. 11 messages from GW.! I'd rather grow forsythia and parsnips than buy anything from them.

These days you need a TV licence to watch anything on iplayer. Fortunately BBC Sounds is still free.

I've got the goons visiting this week to 'check whether I need a license', yet the council haven't been harassing me incase I'm slyly flogging veg without a traders' license..

@Mrs. B. if they turn up at your door(it's unlikely they will) don't let them in. Tell them to get off your property and if they demand to come in, tell them to come back with a search warrant.
I've had threatening letters from the licence people which I have ignored. They treat you like criminals even when you've done nothing wrong.
I don't need to go to Tesco, for example and tell them I'm not buying their products any longer, do I? Same principle.
Sorry folks, to be so negative, but all this makes me cross.

@pattie thanks, yes I'm very aware of all that. You're so right, the threatening wording on their silly letters is ridiculous! They have intimidated vulnerable/elderly people into paying when they don't need a license too. No wonder people are leaving in their droves. Goons are worse than bailiffs!!
I am putting a notice on the door though, to outline my charges for an interview.

I'm lucky in France, no TV license, they did away with it, but I can watch British programmes with a satellite dish. OH willing pays for his TV license in Norfolk and we watch TV there with Catch Up, more flexible and we don't have a signal there anyway. We watch TV nearly every evening and I feel life is richer for it. I also like some of the daytime programmes like Escape to the Country. I love looking at the beautiful English countryside.

British TV is ways ahead of German TV. They pay 18 EUR for the 2 TV License channels and their sub-channels. All they get is a shared programme on both channels up to 2:00 PM, followed by a type of East Enders style series, and in the evening talk-shows where the participants are all the same and who move from talk show to talkshow over the week and that goes for years now.
I can't think a TV life without BBC. Makes my after work life, starting with Bargain Hunt while having lunch. (I start working at 5 if you wonder).
Love Escape to the Country, Antique Roadshow, Fake or Fortune, Antique Roadtrip, Flog it, Digging for Britain, Neil Olliver, Lucy Worslay programs and profited so much from Chris Packham's Earth series and don't forget Attenborough. But also watched all Time Teams and similar on other channels. All this stuff I can learn from.
I don't don't care about artificial stories in movies. The time when a Howards End and similar were possible is gone.

For all who like the BBC bashing, rolling down is easier once you are on the top, rolling up from the bottom impossible (as seen with German TV).

Sorry but what is the purpose of this thread? Recent postings have been nothing to do with GW. I was someone who was an on/off participant to GW (rightly or wrongly I did feel at times there was a GW clique going on). I feel I need to say that I'm rather uncomfortable how this thread is developing. We should be making all efforts to blend in with the patient (original) members of GC and leave all whiff of any GW clique behind. I can see the value of another thread 'GW Meeting Place' and that's been great for finding exGW members. Imagine how would GW migrants feel if there was a Gardener's Corner Forum?

Apologies, I just had to speak up.

It does rather seem to have outlived it’s usefulness.

We, as the admin on here, have been happy to let this thread run as we realised that the new members from GW were feeling somewhat traumatised but we agree that there is a stage at which integration would be helpful in avoiding a 'them and us' situation.

We think that @Jenny_Aster has stated the thing very well and, as all of you have fitted in so well, hope that you would feel the same. We could lock this thread if it wouldn't upset you.

Sorry @Jenny_Aster I normally don’t comment on such discussions but I can’t bear that BBC bias. My comment was not about GW but when someone mixed up the forum/magazine and the TV channel decisions.

No need to apologise, I even wrote a post myself but in the end had 2nd thoughts and didn't press the 'button'. x
