Lovely pics @Busy-Lizzie. I remember visiting there with my Australian brother and SIL when they were over here for a holiday. I think I have mentioned to you before that some jackdaws had built their nest in one of the chimneys and when the fire had been lit, the front room of the house had been filled with choking smoke and we had to evacuate quickly. It is interesting reading about her love of the native Herdwick sheep and how much effort she put in to conserve the breed.

A few photos from our visit to Great Dixter yesterday, always nice to be back long after the tulip displays have been and gone and to see how they use colour in the summer. Overall it felt more full and natural in more areas, the foliage garden made out of the old rose garden was nearly impenetrable to a tall person like me, with conifers getting too much in the way, but it had a very lush, enclosed feel which is their intention. Except for a rude coach group, it was great to say goodbye to it before we move to Wales. PXL_20240630_125415259.jpg

Thank you @amancalledgeorge for all those lovely photos. Great Dixter is one of my favourite gardens. Good luck with your move to Wales.

Thanks @Busy-Lizzie I can't wait to get our of London... enough is enough. Dixter is so lovely and informal, you really appreciate the low key atmosphere unlike most other gardens of its fame.

I loved my visit to Great Dixter many years ago.
Lovely photos @amancalledgeorge. I'm particularly impressed by the lack of any people in every one (as far as I can see).
I seem to recall waiting ages for people to get out of the way so that I could take a quick photo.

Thanks for the photos @amancalledgeorge , we also loved our visit to Great Dixter a few years ago, as you say, it has a very special atmosphere. We had the good fortune to have Fergus Garret talk at our gardening club a year or two ago, he was great.

Must be such a responsibility to be in charge of it @lizzie27 hope they keep going on the same track and not turn super commercial in the future. It just feels genuine.

Not really @Ladybird4, I can't smell roses in the rain. A sunny evening is another matter.
