Thanks woo. I get a lot of satisfaction in making something like this and I have learnt to be patient with progress and enjoy the challange.
Its just about one month now since I started and I should think about another week on the finish will see job completion

Thanks for the comments guys, makes me feel good.
Today its raining so more progress on the table was possible.
I have rubbed it all down with 0000 grade wirewool again and given it its first coat of shellac sealer.
Tomorrow I shall spend more time with 0000 wirewool and then decide if it needs more coats of shellac before I start to polish it.
I hope you can see in the pictures the grain and the colour of the wood is starting to develop.

Another report tomorrow if the shellac will harden enough with the high humidity we are seeing at the moment.

    Update today is good...
I have now completed two layers of shellac with a rub down of 600 grade wet and dry in between coats.
This morning I applied the first coat of finishing wax polish and reassembled the top to the frame.
    I`m please with the result.
    What do you think?

This first picture shows the grain and colour starting to look good after the first coat of wax.
This will darken over time and with additional coats of wax

A slighly wider shot this time

This is the top and leaf reassembled

    This is the finished table.
In a day or two I shall apply a second coat of wax and continue that until I am happy with the finish

It has taken just over a month for me to make this table so it has taken a fair few hours. I hope it is still around in the 100 years or so and being enjoyed as much as I have enjoyed making it and the enjoyment both of us shall get out of it in a day or so when I press it into service.
Finally I must many say thanks to all those who have shown an interest in the project and your compliments during the process.

It seems the pictures above are showing a tad to much red.
I have re taken this picture below which I hope shows the colour better.

Sounds like fence posts to me Robert.:D

You made a real good job on the table.
I used to use shellac, (french polish), then wire wool and wax years ago.

I must admit I never found it that resistant to water or or heat and one hot plate on the table and its going to show a mark.
I'm sure you know this, but now days I use polyurethane, three good coats of a satin finish, denib between coats, followed by the old wire wool and wax gives a very similar finish, but its a lot harder wearing.:)
