    I think if your soil isn't suited, you either have to forget about them, or do the usual method of growing in a container of some kind where you can dictate the growing medium.
    It would be the same as me trying to grow something that needs quite alkaline soil and really sharp drainage, which often go together. Not easy in my garden.

    I grow them. Some in cattle drinking bowls, others in troughs and one in the Alpine house. I buy ph6 soil locally from a gravel/topsoil/sand merchant. I don't grow them in my ordinary soil in the garden because it's not acidic. Fabulous plant with its mini golf balls.

    i'm wondering if its worth trying it again in a container with ericaceous soil outdoors
