I agree Armandii, I think it would distract people from the main forum. :)

To be honest, I don't see the need for it on here. The forum is very active anyway, and I for one enjoy flicking between threads without the pressure to reply immediately. With instant chat, it becomes almost an obligation. It happens to me on Facebook sometimes. I log on just to add my drunking rambling of the day and one of my friends spots that I'm there. Next thing I know I'm stuck in a chit chat scenario that we both know neither of us really wants, until one of us finally announces, "sorry, must go, apparently my bath water is ready".:heehee:

Its not that we don't want to chat, its just that we dont want to dedicate 100% attention to the computer screen for the entire duration of a conversation.

        Ah, that explains a lot.:heehee:

This has been raised a time or two over the years but the fact is - as I understand it - not only are chat boxes buggy but they are also prone to trolls. Bugginess is beyond the skills of the present staff to manage and the possibility trolls is above and beyond the call of duty, moderator-wise.

Would a simple "no" have sufficed?

The other gardening forum i use has a chat room and it's a lot of fun.

You only join in if you want to and a lot of people don't really understand what a chat room is and avoid it !!!

I host a gardening quiz there on a Thursday evening most weeks (although not for the past few because i've had a bit of difficulty finding the time  ), it's just a bit of fun and not deadly serious but allows members to have friendly chats

Basically a chat room is a little box you type your posts into and other people are doing the same thing at the same time ..... this means that you're talking together and at the same time and not having to wait for that member to come back online to answer etc. etc.

              I think they're worth considering :)

I have been in chat rooms in my early internet days , someone always ended up arguing ! :rolleyespink: I think a chat on GC would tend to form two camps i.e. the regular chatters clique , and the regular posters who would miss all this. So it's a no from my corner ( we don't seem to have a thumbs down smilie ? )

I wouldn't use a chat room, the present format suits me 100%. I can post a query on a thread and come back when the time suits me to see what responses there are. On a chat room you have to be there watching your PC.

Done abit of research now and on vbull which is the software this forum runs on, the option I am asking for is called vaispy.php and is an option in the main control panel,so who ever stokes the fire and bungs the coal on in the engine room should easily be able to install it,no costs and no risk of bugs.
This is very handy if you have a few screens running when perhaps working on something else or as I often am on several forums at once.:thumb:
