GC Chat room

The problem LD is that as a community we have always been very divided on this subject some people would like it and others really, really don't want it I understand that not everyone would have to join in but most of us feel that it would detract from the main board and people would use the chat box and not the forum:o

I think as a one off thing that it might be nice however at the moment there is absolutely nothing stopping the people who want to talk real-time, swapping sykpe or MSN addys and chatting that way

 

I am not on about live chat Aesculus,at the top we have the option to view new posts,very similar to this is live update we new post scroll so you can read new posts as posted with out having to keep clicking to the thread to read.
I am often at the pc but following several sites and can then jump in and join a conversation at will within seconds of the posts being made,if someone wants an answer and i know the answer i can give it whilst they are still on line.This way i can have forums running whilst still doing some work!!

Sorry, you are overlooking what I would say is the obvious.

Some one types a question, presses submit, 10 seconds later you get notification, you type an answer and press submit.

The "thing" is once they pressed the submit button, they have gone else where, so do not see your reply, and I always thought the idea of a forum was to get as many answers / opinions as possible, not just one reply from one person.

Well, okay but then you would have thought I was being overbearing and wanted to know the reasons for my saying that. You know well that I've been around the block a few times on this and other issues, honey! :WINK1:

As for "what is a chat box", generally when two or more people engage in a 'conversation' via instant chat, they stay put and respond to comments immediately they pop up. If there are half a dozen peeps on it, there can be two or three conversations running at the same time which gets quite interesting!

The thing about the forum is say it on here...and it's here forever! Say it in a chat box and it's gone forever.

For example someone asks on the Chat, "What is the answer to growth, the vegetables and everything?" the answer comes back as "42". A few people are enlighteded forever, but it's not saved or searchable for those who where not glued to their screens at that moment. That would be a waste.

It's quite surprising just how much info this forum contains, and I'm all for that being added to or built upon, and every member here adds to that every time they click "Submit Reply" or "Submit New Thread".

I always think of Chat rooms as being just that, a place for chatter.

If you have a serious question, or discussion you put it on the forum.

Bearing that in mind, I can think of a few threads that might be worthy of a chatroom:WINK1:?????

Not sure I would use it though,

Could it not be run as a trial, say for a month and see how much use its getting at the end of the period?

There is an alternative, that shouldn't present us with further moderation problems.

Start a thread in Non Gardening entitled "Tonights Chat"

Folk who want a chat could then keep a tab open on that & see how it goes.

Just my little thought.

 

If moderation is a concern I would be more than happy to put myself forward for the job :D
