I only flash my lights to alert oncoming traffic that there's a radar/speed trap behind me...

You can get fined for that here. There was a fairly high profile case a few years ago. Coppers did someone for issuing such a warning. I can't remember the exact details but it went something like this. The defendant argued that in the UK, there is supposed to be a warning if speed cameras are in use. He was issuing such a warning. Also it is not illegal to flash your lights to warn other road users of a hazard. In fact it is encouraged in the highway code.

Prosecution said that the camera was not a hazard, and therefore the defendant was guilty of giving a false or misleading signal that could have posed a hazard. Defendant lost and got fined, and Ithink he also got points on his license.

Oh, they tried that one here too and turns out we have no law against it.

They issue tickets to get peopke to slow down, flashing warnings slow people down. Same results just less revenue for the pols

I had to inform a copper one day that there is no law about sassing them either. I generally respect them but when they act stupidly,I don't hesitate to tell them...:heehee:

My brother used to drive with a friend from Canada down to Florida and stopping over with friends on the way. He used to get speeding tickets in different States and once asked a Man with a Tall Hat and Uniform and a Gun who stopped him "Was it true that to join the State Police you had to know someone who could write?" Luckily, the Copper took it in reasonable humour and told him"No one likes a Smart Ar...se, Sir" and gave him a ticket

Oh, I wouldn't say anything to a cop in the states. I read the papers and am very aware of the shootist culture..

It is sad that there are more gun deaths than vehicular deaths in the US per year. And even more sad is that approximately half of those are suicides. And even more sad than that is the trend is upwards each year.

Here, our gun toters are mostly gang members with illegal weapons. Just as deadly, just less numerous.

Interesting . You really keep track of our gun deaths compared to our vehicular deaths, and USA suicide rates compared to yours, and your amount of gangs members compared to ours. Wow. that is amazing.

I read statistics regarding demograpics, etc of many locales, not just our continent.

I try to understand the culture of fellow forum members by doing so. It may be a flawed way of researching but it is my feeble effort at internet socialization.

I appreciate that owning a firearm for 99 percent of Americans shows a great deal of self control. Some days I know if I had a gun, I'd point it at my OH to get him to relinquish the remote :heehee:

We just haven't been raised to respect/understand the consequences of this type of ownership. Our laws insulate us from having a gun in every home. good, bad ???:dunno:

Just remember, America is a melting pot of cultures, even in a marriage you can have two cultures. On my street alone I have 5 cultures, but each summer all of us join for a neighborhood gathering of fun and fellowship.
Perhaps in Paris had someone had a gun in the crowd the shooter would have been disabled.--Perhaps.
With the road rage I saw first hand, upon my first visit driving in Toronto, I understand the no gun law.

A firearm is pretty much unique in its concept. Knives, for chopping food, can kill. A car, for transportation, can kill. A bedside lamp, picked up in anger, can kill.

All these things are built for other purposes. A firearm is designed and built for only one purpose. To kill.

The use of firearms in this country is restricted much more than it would appear from that article. It is, almost, just restricted to shotguns with no more than a possible load of two cartridges. Automatic weapons and handguns are banned. Single or double shot rifles are restricted to certain professions and the intention to use them is notifiable.

I'm not sure that the Paris incident is necessarily a good example as the terrorists/nutters killed most of the people in their initial attacks or with their bomb vests. If allowable, I'm not sure how many members of the public would have taken firearms into a restaurant, theatre or nightclub in order to defend themselves.

So far, this year, there have been 379 mass shootings in the U.S. resulting in over 400 deaths and almost 2,000 injuries (the last one being on Friday with 3 dead and 9 wounded). On top of that there have been another 7,000 deaths (intentional or accidental) and 18,000 injuries this year. Very few of the mass shootings were stopped by a member of the public.

Of course, over here, I wouldn't want to try a terrorist attack in Glasgow. Even without being armed, some of the public attacked and apprehended the car bombers when it crashed into the International airport. One man, John Smeaton, received a Queens Gallantry Medal - he kicked one of the attackers in the testicles :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Lets hope with our "shootist culture" as Lori puts it, that is enough to keep others from wanting to move in to our country.
