      For me his only saving grace is that he openly admits to having no horticultural qualification.....(for me anyway) it shows.
      Anyone who would claim that Spencer sweet peas have 'little or no scent', doesn't know what they're talking about. His comment certainly ruffled a few feathers in the sweet pea growing fraternity.

        Good afternoon well I think he is a star not in the same mould as Geoff Hamilton but for a man who needs a knee replacement maybe even two,haas difficulty in walking to far.and carries on as best he can ,he uses a light box to help with his Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), and wrote in his autobiography about trying cognitive behavioural therapy and Prozac to help cope with his depression.
        “Light boxes are helpful — I’ve used them for years,” he says. “The trick is starting to use them earlier in the year, before the light goes, before you’re aware of it.”

        He only describes himself an amateur! "Well, I'm still an am amateur gardener - I'm self-taught and I haven't done gardening for a living since I was 23," he says.
        "I'm a professional writer and broadcaster, not a gardener.” And his advice for anyone wanting to take up gardening themselves?
        “Just try it. Buy seeds and grow something you'd like to eat, that you'd take pleasure in. The process is not important - we get too hung up on the process. Don't worry about getting it right. Just do it.

        I have always said with different TV gardeners that if I could work side by side with them ,then that's good enough for Woo:smile:

          The clip with Carole Klein is one I don't remember, she's not changed much, her love of flowers is just as evident back then.

              Well I know some pretty good tradesmen that have not had any training, I also know some pretty rubbish trades men that have all the NVQs you can mention.

              I think basing his expertise on whether he knows if sweet peas have scent or not is being just a bit short sighted.
              He probably has some kind of script, not entirely written by himself.

              I always think gardening is far too diverse to know all aspects.:smile:

                  You have a problem there, David,........pete trusts no one!!!!:dunno::heehee::loll:Besides we all have our different opinions regarding the different Garden Presenters formed on our own experiences in gardening and the way we "take" to how a program is presented. I quite like Monty Don although I obviously don't rate him any where near Geoff. To be honest, I don't think gardeners, or presenters, can become a great one just because they've got some sort of qualification in that area. So, in my opinion, Monty Don is okay, no better or worse than the others on the Box at the moment, trust me.:heehee:

                      Monty imho is great ,he has his own spin on our hobby.
                      Love him or hate him he has a lot to offer.
                      Gardening is not an exact science as we all know ,so opinions are diverse.
                      So actually I can't wait to see his next GW.

                        Monty is fine with me. If a presenter can inspire folks to get into gardening, then all is well imo. We all learn from our own experiences , and it's not really an exact science, nor should it be. Where's the fun in that?

                          I tend to think that any gardening presenters are ok, just as long as they dont keep banging on about what colour flowers go with other colours.

                          If they want to be arty farty, they should stick to painting.
                          And I see plenty of them.

                          Gardening is about getting your hands dirty,IMO.
