I did that with mine last Winter and they both (Hedychium gardnerianum & H. greenii) flowered - and I was expecting that H. gardnerianum would need potting and bringing in to flower. So maybe it was the lousy season?

Mine were in unheated, frost free, conservatory.

I have a well established clump of H. gardnerianum growing in the garden, the top growth usually gets frosted around late December after which I cut it back to ground level.
It always flowers well, so from that I gather H. gardnerianum,at least, does not need to remain evergreen, even though it is quite capable of doing so, if kept frost free. Oct 12 029.jpg

Pete - I always thought that Kent could have some very cold winters, but you keep amazing me with your exotics that grow outside. That gardnerianum looks wonderful.

Kristen - you are probably right. It was such a cold summer that many things either failed to flower or failed to produce seed.
