Just to chuck my 2ds worth in.
In the garden there are a few things I really dislike. One is hard work, like digging unwanted trees/shrubs out. Another, is indisciminated herbicide usage.
The method I use is to take said plant, and cut all stems to just above ground level and then, using a dropper bottle, add 1 or 2 drops of 360 Glyphosate to the end of each stem. If a single or multiple trunks, then a few holes, drilled in the trunk and filled with the same.
The glyphosate is completely contained, the plant dies, and about 1 yr later the remains are often rotten enough to easily break up.
Over the years, I have managed to get rid of rampant Bougainvillea and Rhus (in Australia), and other plants that reshoot from any root left alive.

I think that all of the Berberis is thorny. It looks like a cotoneaster but all doesn't have berries. I had a evergreen one and it didn't have many.
