Getting rid of slugs/snails

The beer worked a treat, problem was slugs kept me awake all night singing " Show me the way to go home i'm tired and i want to go to bed",

 

not just me on these forums thats one bean short of a row then :D

 

im afraid i have resorted to slug pellets :( around my pots lots of dead slugs how many more can there be :confused:

 

I resort to them too Lizzie..just don't tell everybody

 

I checked the slug trap last night for the first time (hubby bought it and it was his gadget to play with), we'd caught a slug and a snail, and either they got very very drunk or hubby wasn't very generous with his John Smiths! Fortunately so far the copper tape seems to be helping keep the slimy rotters away too. Like you said Sallyann, it does look ok.

hello hannah, i read helen's advice and i do like the idea of a couple of bantam's is there much work involved in looking after them ? hutch, additional food in winter. [newbie] if i'm hijacking your thread forgiveness and ignore.

I went out on slug and snail patrol yesterday evening. Armed with a torch, heavy boots and a sharp knife I do patrol most evenings, have several slug pubs, resident toads and frogs, visiting hedgehogs, and lots of birds. I just love finding smashed snail shells
One young toad has moved into my wee greenhouse, he is settled into a pot of clematis cuttings!
ps, got nineteen slugs and two snails last night, not many at all, I was getting over fifty slugs a night last year

 

Hey - I tried slug pubs for the first time last night. Got 13! I'm impressed. Have tried various organic deterents to no avail and was beginning to despair as my veg patch was getting rapidly munched.
Thanks for the tips...let's hope the cheap lager keeps working.

 

AAAAGH! No pepper for cats! They get it in their eyes apparently, when they wash, it's very cruel. I used mulch on my beds and the cats stopped s******* on there

Slugs have devastated one marigold of mine but not the others, hmmm - after hearing about COPPER TOOLS used in the soil to dig/transfer, and copper tape, I decided to try bits of copper pipe connectors stuck into the soil, doesn't seem to have worked although I don't get enough slugs & snails to notice really. I can't kill owt so I leave them to it!

 

I know everyone says frogs/toads eat slugs, but has anyone ever actually seen this.
I've got masses of frogs, but I've also got masses of slugs. Not at this moment in time as its very dry, but give it a couple of wet days, and they'll be back
What I'm trying to workout is, is it true or just one of those myths that some bright spark wrote in a book years ago, and everybody now repeats. It does happen. :D

Try to avoid using slug pellets if possible, if hedgehogs or birds eat slugs killed by these they will be harmed too :(
There is an organic slug killer called nemaslug which will not harm other creatures in your garden.

 

If you listen to an hedgehog rustling through the hedge bottom then the noise turns to a slurping sound...thats when its found a slug
