We have held a few of ours back in pots in the greenhouse. When do you plant outside?

I'm keeping a few in pots in the greenhouse, there was a bit of a size difference between my outside ones and the others in the show last year :th scifD36:

As a newbie to giant onion growing, can you let me know why the wires or supports are around the onions and do they stay on all the way through?

The wires/supports are there to hold up the leaves. In theory, the more leaves you have, the greater the onions potential to grow big :)
