Mine are not giant onions . Just jumping in on this thread with a perennial question - when to harvest ?
Now I normally pick mine around the last week in August. But the foliage is still 100% green , so I presume as with most things this year we are a couple of weeks late.
I got these two when to harvest photos . The first seems to be 100% green . The second ( from the RHS site no less !) seems to be very very late.
What signs should I look out for to know when to harvest.

              TIA Confused of Wigan

                They're not bad Harry :)

I normally lift them and let them ripen when the tops have dropped, but bringing them in this year at that stage as its been very wet :)

Your's look ready to pull up Harry, they need a couple of weeks in the sun (!) to ripen/harden so they store longer. The sooner you start the better given there isn't much sun around. I've put my smaller onions in a blow-away to keep the rain off whilst they dry/harden.

Hi Harry, just jumping in myself on this thread, my onions have been dry for most of the summer, but never known them to stay green this long.
Mine are smaller than usual, and now we have had some rain, so not expecting them to dry off on their own just yet.
I've some years, gone round with a fork to just break the roots but still leave the plants in position for a couple of weeks, kind of telling them its time to go dormant.

Hoping for some dry weather in September.:)

I'm jumping in here as well :heehee:. After reading the above posts about when to lift onions, we took ours out a couple of days ago.

I wasn't aiming to grow anything giant but there are always some that grow quite big. These are the two biggest, both ailsa craig
