We grew mamouth onions this year. We may try Kelsae or Ailsa Craig next year.

I was also thinking of freezing some onions but according to the internet frozen onions lose some of their flavour and although it says you can freeze for 6 months, recommendation is you eat within 6 weeks.

I have frozen them in the past, along with tomatoes to make a sauce base, but they were not a success. When thawed out the onions had a nasty tang. This year I've frozen them raw, I'm yet to try any, I thought I'd wait a month or two then try them.

My Kelsae onion seeds arrived this morning. I received cultural instructions with them - great for us newbies to giant onion growing. Sorry its not very clear.

Bring on the Gardeners Corner giant onion competition next year lol

I have read this post now, from page one all through and I'm still puzzled. You grow them til they are part way out of the soil in the pot, then you put them down in the ground outside/bigger container?:what:

What is this bolting? Do they grow legs and run for it?

                        No, really what is that?
many thanks - because my packet of seeds is on the way here...:)

Yep, start them undercover in pots as the weather is too cold outside for an early start.

Bolting just means going to seed, if that happens they get a tube running up thru the middle and they put their energy into the seed rather than blubbing up :)
