JJ ..A sunny warm widow cill will be fine. They only need heat for germination but then then need to be relatively cool for growing on (around 13 degrees) they do need plenty of light though:dbgrtmb:

Sown an entire packet of Bedfordshire Champions too, didn't mean to, my hand slipped

          It's done now, innit.

I may give this a shot then. My kitchen window is south facing. Red onion sets are so expensive and I want to make me a load of red onion chutney this year.

              Hi JJ :)
Just to clarify, are you intending to grow whoppers?

                Hiya JJ.
If you want whoppers, then you need to sow asap! Just be aware though, it's not without problems. Light and heat need to be addressed. I had to use quite expensive lighting (both to buy and run), and had to be prepared to add heat should the need arise - mine were in the greenhouse. Also, as far as I'm aware, red onions don't have the same potential to grow as big as their white counterparts.
That said, if you want to have a crack at it, give it a go, we're here to help :blue thumb:
I grew some of these a couple of years ago, sown early March, and was very satisfied with the results.
