Very astute point Paul, is anyone here actually going to give up their visits to the £1 shop?

Hadn't thought about it like that before, but its a good point and shows that environmental taxes are just another way to raise money.

What is happening in the undeveloped word is only what was happening here 50yrs ago or more.

Nobody cared about tomorrow, they were all too intent on improving their own standard of living.

Its only us so called wealthy countries that can afford to stand back and question what's going on.

As to fitting log burning stoves and windmills to solve the problem, it will only be done if its a saving for the individual concerned, If we all did it I'm sure a new government tax would be brought in.

Hate to think how the road tax on small vehicles will rise if the larger ones ever get forced off the road.

Anyway if we all burnt logs there wouldn't be enough trees to go round
And it we all had windmills would there be enough wind to go round:D

Soon there wont be enough land to grow your own veg, just look at the waiting lists for allotments.

There is only one answer to all this and I'm sure nature will provide it, eventually.

I think you should leave the people who don't believe in global warming alone.
I recycle and have a compost bin.
I take old and unwanted clothes etc to the charity shops.
I waste nothing but then again I never have.
Just because I and a lot of others don't think the same as you Global warming believers do you can't try and make them look or feel bad.
    No way.
We have one life and it's up to us to enjoy it and do the best we can with it.
I say everyone to their own, believe what you want but don't try and force you views on others , thats just wrong..
I won't be changing my one life in a hurry.

" I am highly suspicious of a government-any government regardless of party, that allow ..."

Politics is always a muddle. Personally I don't have a problem with waste going to India if:

We don't yet have recycling plants, and need to get people into the habit of separating their waste before it becomes viable, and ships are going back empty to India ...

... however, I won't be surprised to hear that none of those were the reasons!

"Population control in China worked well"

As others have said: Female children abandoned (or quite possibly strangled at birth). Lots of problems, now, with adults who grew up with no siblings, were "pushed" to be good at music, or whatever, to differentiate them - and because their parents had more disposable income with only one child to raise

"India, China, Africa etc are spraying huge quantity's of organophosphates, running ancient loorys and cars, polluting watercourses, burning waste etc etc."

Yeah, but as Pete said we did that 50 years ago too ... they have to get from where they were to where we are. As well as building a new coal fired, polluting, power station each week (or month, I forget exactly what I read) they are installing huge quantities of renewable energy power generation. All the vacuum-tube type solar panels, regardless of brand, come from China ... It won't be long before they replace their polluting energy generation with "free" sun-powered, and then we had better watch out, or we will be the third world.

"We have to accept that we are a tiny country and Co2 contributor"

The UK isn't a tiny contributor to CO2 ... (sorry, spent five minutes looking for a reference, and can't find it easily, so I'll have to hope I've not misremembered that)

"Anyway if we all burnt logs there wouldn't be enough trees to go round"

Can't find the statistic for that either now, but I remember reading the area of Scottish woodland that would be needed to provide enough power for the UK. Clearly that wood wouldn't be available for anything else! but I was quite surprised that we could be self-sufficient in wood, for heating, without having to use Oil, Gas or Coal. So it may be more doable than you think ... not withstanding the practicalities.

"it we all had windmills would there be enough wind to go round"

In a word, No. I read an interesting book which calculated the total energy use for everything we do in the UK, and then attempted to calculate how much land / sea / etc. could be given over to renewable energy production, taking into account how much land could be used, how often the wind blows / sunshines / etc. It is JUST possible to get enough energy if we use every last spare inch - and allowing for a few people complaining about wind-flowers not-in-my-back-yard and the practicalities of creating a new grid to inter-connect it all, then its going to be blinking hard (but so was drilling for oil in the North Sea and building pipelines to bring the oil ashore - or putting a man on the moon, for that matter).

I suggest we all reconvene in 30 years to see how it turned out!
