    A sobering thought.:frown:
Bearing in mind the title of this thread.
Should I stop peeing on my compost bin?
I mean is it safe, will I kill all my plants.
I'm really worried about this, and would welcome your thoughts:biggrin:

Admin only remove posts that fall foul of the established GC rules.:paladin: On any controversial subject members are bound to disagree on the validity of another member's argument, point of view, beliefs and the "evidence" that is produced to confirm or strengthen the aforementioned.
While the person posting and presenting their argument, evidence and belief is entitled to do so, perhaps the presentation could be such as to leave the viewing members with the ability to decide whether or not the evidence is fact and not just the belief of the member stating the case.
Whatever the discussion is there will always be an opposing view and the important thing to remember that that is exactly what they are, views, despite a member presenting his/her view as fact. The joy of GC, to me, is that we can have opposing views, get frustrated and irritated by that opposing view, and still be able to argue and/or discuss the subject without falling foul of breaking the normal rules of courtesy and reason.:snork:

        exactly!

but if I disagree with someone's viewpoint on a forum, I don't tell them to stop posting and tell them their posts are junk .... that's rude IMHO

Before we all get carried away, the point that Kristen was making (imo) was that just because someone states something as fact, doesn't make it fact. If one searches on a particular subject, one can 'prove' anything. Anyway folks, keep it clean:WINK1:

Arnt 90% of plants you see today GM ? From garden plants, to food crops are these crops the same plants that grow naturally ? Sure, they havnt been test tubed BUT they have been engineered by humans by selective breeding to get what we want.

To be honest, i cant see any difference.

As far as I can see, the big difference is that selective breeding only makes use of new strains or variations which are still naturally occurring, while genetic modification interferes with the natural reproduction process to produce organisms which could never occur naturally.

Most of the GM organisms are crops that feed the world and perhaps the original purpose was quite innocent, and possibly naive, in that it being developed to help countries that weren't able to grow enough for their own population without being commercially dominated. However, that has changed with time.

Most of the GM crops are made to resist and kill pests and diseases and also be super tolerant to the pesticides being sprayed. To start with less air spraying of crops resulted but it is now increasingly used in support of the GM crops. The main, and realistic, worry of the farmers and agriculturalists is the the pests and diseases are mutating to become able to overcome the genes in the crops put there to resist and kill them. The problem being that, just like anti-biotics, pests and diseases combined with Nature will find a way to become resistant to pesticides and GM's. Which makes me wonder how far man can go in trying to find something Nature can't beat. I agree Nature does modify and change plant to cope with situations and the like, but that is called natural evolution and Nature has been doing that for millions of years.
Man's efforts to change things or introduce species of animals and plants into places where Nature had not intended has ended in a lot of spectacular disasters and failures that have caused more problems than there were in the first place, and is not exactly covered in glory, so I'm wondering why GM would be any different?
. I'm not against GM but my faith in our ability to use it for the right reasons in the right place without commercial interests overriding the dangers is somewhat low.

              Armandii,
I am as troubled and muddled about all this as the next GC member, but what I do know is that Commercial Interest now rules the world. Like a cancer it has spread and will continue to do so.It will rule until the grand day of judgement. I only hope that good will prevail over evil, but I have very strong doubts now.

I sprayed some glyphosate this evening, not getting much chance this year due to the wind and rain.

As to GM which I think is a different issue.

Not heard much about failures, but I'm sure the internet is full of it, if you know where to look.

Then we think alike and recognise the problems, Jenny.:snork: Commercial interests do rule the world in this era, but I'm not so sure about it continuing until "the grand day of judgement", although I have a suspicion that the commercial interests are blindly hastening the arrival of that day:coffee:
