but the classical and in my opinion stupid tally ho stiff upper lip element of the English character. So I've binned off the silly English stiff upper lip.

Surely that should be the BRITISH stiff upper lip?

I think I could list a few, but not from attending the theatre or cinema (where, in the '40's, that is where you would get to know of them), more from watching BBC2 on a Saturday afternoon when all the re-runs of '40's classic films were shown as an alternative to the sport being shown on BBC1 and ITV!! :heehee: (Ooh, err, only 3 channels to choose from then! :snorky: )
Purely out of curiosity, I looked up 1940 Celebrity deaths list and top of the search engine was "Famous People who died in 1940". Twenty were listed for that year: one female listed as "artist" and one male listed as "film actor" (but also law enforcement and civil servant to his credit). The rest consisted of activists, diplomats, cyclist, physicist/scientist/academic, etc.
But the point that was being made (as I understood it) by Kindred is that technology has not only brought entertainers (of all genres) into your own sitting room, (radio, TV, Sky TV, video, DVD, Chat Shows, magazines specifically designed around "celebrity" gossip; the internet etc) but also that there are now so many opportunities for people to become a "celebrity" across a number of different mediums. Thus, as the number of "well known" people increase, it stands to reason that the obituary column grows ever longer.

Not necessarily. I don't think so. England is only a small part of Britain. Most of Britain in terms of land mass is made of celtic nations. I haven't met every Scottish, Irish and Welsh person but the ones I have met have tended to be more open and expressive than their English counterparts.

00000000000000000000000000001348No, England is the BIGGEST part of the United Kingdom, and, as a Welshman, I disagree we are more emotional. We tend to be more acceptive of life and death than that.

Its nothing to do with tally ho stiff upper lips or any thing else like that its about putting things into proportion.
How often have you thought you knew a so called celeb?
Only to find out they are very different to their public image.

Especially these days, we are tending in some cases to find out that in real life many are not what they appear to be.
Save your true feelings for those you really know.

Feel sad about the passing of a celeb if you really liked their public image, but dont make out you were some kind of personal friend.
Because in most cases you weren't.;)

Everyone is entitled to deal with death, or other things, in their own way but I think that pete has put it quite succinctly.

On the other hand, you never know how something is going to affect you. I have dealt with the passing of many friends and relations (a sign of my advancing years :noidea:) and all have affected me to a greater or lesser degree. I find it quite difficult to give eulogies because I'm never sure what other peoples' views are but I say what I have to.

The thing that surprised me the greatest was when Oscar the cat died. He adopted us in his adulthood and never lived in the house, but he seemed to trust us implicitly, gave affection and always came to us when he needed help (usually accidental damage or in fights). When he was dying he was panicking and his eyes seemed to be saying "why can't you help me"? I bawled my eyes out! :cry3:

Yes, I've cried for some people, felt sad for almost everyone but never been hit by something like that before.

True, i don't do funerals/weddings etc, and i've been slagged off for not going, i've tolled people i don't like it and do my own thing, which is, after the funeral and no one is there i go and say my bit, but every one says it's wrong, but i will still do my own thing

Everyone seems to have missed that we also lost the weatherman Ian McCaskill to Dementia on December 10th 2016.Now he was a lovely man and I always enjoyed his weather forecasts RIP:sad:

As I said on the other thread about all these young people dying early,if they hadn't used drugs or got addicted to prescription meds then they would probably still be around.I expect there wasn't the use of these drugs in quiet the same way in the 20's,30's, and 40's but as I wasn't born then I am not sure if they were even around in that time:scratch:

As the news reports keeps saying that prolonged use of these drugs plus all the alcohol they seem to consume in large quantities for years starts to affect the heart to such an extent that it eventually kills them:sad:

I know we have lost a few celebs this year to cancer or Dementia in the case of Ian McCaskill, and Terry Prachett (sp) But a lot of the others only had themselves to blame. The
papers say that even Carrie Fisher was back on the drugs a month before she died:scratch:

We have found that we have been more upset about losing our dog and three cats over the last few years than we have about relatives dying, but then I guess is because we saw the pets every day of the week and they gave us unconditional love, more so than any relatives did:mute:
