I am "ashamed" to admit that I agree whole heartedly with the above and find it difficult to understand this relatively new phenonmenon of mass grief for celebrities who die that few of the mourners would have known personally. Altho come to think of it, it's not so new if you consider women committing suicide after Rudolph Valentino died in the 20s
Like Jiffy I don't "do" funerals unless I absolutely have to. Indeed it was deemed wrong for women to attend funerals in Scotland until about the 1960s.
As Shiney rightly puts it we are all different in how we deal with things and while I may think some people are completely over the top grieving for somebody that they had never met (Diana as an example) they are just as entitled as I am to their views.
I am NOT having a funeral unless where my body is due to go is rejected(highly likely as it will have completely fallen to bits fairly soon:)). I couldn't think of anything worse than some minister (Scottish equivilent to a vicar sort of) waxing lyrical about me who he will have known not at all!
I found it dreadful listening to some minister droaning on about my Mum when she died. DESPITE me telling him exactly what she was like. he made her out to be holier than tho and pretty close to Mother Teressa when in reality she was a great sportswoman who played a mean game of poker, smoked like a lum and drank a good couple of Scotches daily!
I'm a believer in trying to do good deeds/show kindness and respect to the living not the dead.

That's the problem with these foreign computers :heehee:. Maybe we can bridge the difference, somehow. :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Although I'm not one for funerals I do go to them out of respect to the bereaved and they do seem to appreciate it.

Some of the funerals that I've been to have been quite joyous occasions and a celebration of the person's life. Favourite pieces of music played (one was all jazz) and musicians playing. Humorous anecdotes and interesting stories.

The most recent 'enjoyable' funeral we went to was in the summer. It was of a second cousin (son of a first cousin that I know well) but I had never met him. This was mainly because of my cousin travelling the world during the son's formative years. My cousin lives in the States and we visit him when we go over there and he visits us when he comes over.

So I knew absolutely nothing about him. The funeral was held in a posh cemetery hall that does religious, non-denominational and totally non-religious services. This one was a Humanist funeral (although the father is quite religious). The pall bearers were friends of the deceased and were all dressed in very garish jackets. One was bright blue and covered in exotic birds, another was covered in music and musical instruments, and all the jackets were different. It turned out that all the jackets had been designed by the deceased and worn by him regularly.

From the stories told by his friends, his four ex-wives, his current partner of nine years (all were good friends!) He'd had many jobs in his life and could sell almost anything. He was also a practical joker - but the impression that came across was that he was really loved by all.

The Humanist minister (don't know what to call her) said that as he was not religious we may be wondering why there was a Buddha on top of his coffin. She said 'according to his will, he wanted it there as he might as well get a bit of publicity for his business (he sold exotic statues) and the website was on the back of the order of service. :heehee:

          Hats of to him :dbgrtmb:

As I understood the post, it referred to living celebrities of the 1940's. Earlier, I googled to try to find how many there were. In the US alone, there were well over 200. I couldnt find a list of British celebs. of that decade to add to that number. Remember also that for the first five years of the decade, a celebrity would have been a politician or serving military.

Having said that, I do agree that nowadays, well known people are promoted over a large range of media. In some cases, those same media do promote those from all those years ago also.

I wonder. How many people on here could name 5 or more well known British people of the 1940's?

I know Elizabeth Taylor started acting in the 40s but doubt you are refering to her are you @Sandy Ground? Good excuse for me to boast:). I met her a few times as her son Micheal Wilding was a friend on mine at school. She was very nice to me when I met her in the late 60's. Wonderful eyes, very dark blue and eyelashes to die for. Her son had them too:)

Surely there is a difference between 'mass grief' and respectful acknowledgement? I didn't personally know anyone that fought or died in either of the World Wars, but it does not make their death any less sad, and it certainly doesn't stop me respectfully remembering them each year.

I cannot say that I am particularly grief stricken about any of the famous people that have passed away this year, but will admit that I was really saddened by the death of Glenn Frey, and that simply because I have been a fan of his for most of my life.

                            I don't grieve for people I don't know.

For people I do know, I make a point of either attending the funeral or going to the visitation or if a close friend/relative, both.

I don't know why I insist on doing this because they're not going to come to mine

I don't really care who comes to mine - I'll be dead! In fact, I would much rather that everyone went to the pub and had a good laugh in my memory than moping about the place.
