This is a list of the plants growing in the pond that I either dug up locally from farmer’s fields or nicked from the roadside and a couple that I bought.

    Common Bulrush.

    Purple Loosestrife.

    Yellow Iris.

    Pipewort.

    Arrowhead.

    Bog Myrtle.

    Canna. (Florence Vaughan.)

    Watermint. (a hitchhiker)

    Giant Chain Fern.

    Southern Shield Fern.

    Arum Lily.

Unidentified long grass that grows in local watercouses. (I’m delighted with these.)

    Loddon Lily.

    Water Lily.

    Flowering Rush.

Other hitchhikers, blanket weed and parrotfeather. When I find these, they’re immediately sent into orbit over the back wall. They’re a little persistent, though.

Over the winter I will be planting 8 varieties of seeds and I’m going to try and grow these in the pond. I may be successful but possibly not.

    They are

    Hibiscus Galaxy.
    Hibiscus Palustris.
    Hibiscus Militaris.

    Astrantia Major.

    Baptisia Australis.

    Cimicifuga Racemosa.

    Filipendula Ulmaria.

    Rodgersia Pinnata.

Has anyone any of these growing in their pond and do you find them successful? (Or did they slowly rot away?)

I’m very new to this so I have to experiment.

I’m open to all suggestions about plants that I can grow in the water. The pond is 2 feet deep at the sides and 3 feet in the middle.

The surprising thing about the earth, either side of the pond, is that it is extremely dry. I think that when it rains, the water has a larger area to percolate into, underneath the pond. So normal pondside plants wouldn’t be happy in the planted areas either side of the pond.

They look like Cannas to me KS and I think they are a South African plant.I am not sure whether they can be planted in ponds.

I had one in my garden border that I forgot to dig up the other winter and it died and I never did manage to get any of the ones I have bought in the past to flower:(

I am sure that someone from the Tropical thread will be able to advise you as such:gnthb:

The Angels fishing rods/dieramas look best when there are lots of them overhanging a pond or a pathway, and you have put them in the right place I think. I saw some in a friends garden and it inspired me to get my own. As far as the length of flowering, I have never grown them before so not sure at all.

Fantastic piccies again KS,your pond looks now like it has been there for a long time now that the plants are getting established, and I love the evening ones:thumb:

I had a quick peep at your boat photos as well and even dragged Mr Kandy over to see them as he is mad on boats as well, even though he doesn't own one:D He thought they all were brilliant as well especially the Skerigg Michael and also the one with the dolphin leaping in front of the boat:gnthb:

Thank You for sharing them with us:)

I really like what you've done, and the pics are excellent. I especially like the evening ones.

Thanks Kandy and Clueless the First,

Glad you liked the boating pics as well.

Beside the pond, most of those plants have only been there 6 months so, hopefully, they will fill out next summer and look better.

No-one's replied yet about experimenting with those six varieties of plants, Hibiscus, Astrantia etc in the water. You probably think I'm off my rocker. The people in the garden centre said "You can't do that!" But it's only by trying that you can see what can be done. I'd still like to know if anyone has grown any of those varieties in their pond as opposed to beside the pond.

Stuck one of these trees in recently alongside the pond.

Hopefully it'll complement it, although I don't know whether it will suvive as our garden is very windy.

Planted a row of ferns alongside the north side of our wall by the pond.

          They're five types as follows,

          Polystichum Aculeatum (Hard Shield Fern)

          Polystichum Setiferum (Soft Shield Fern)

Polystichum Braunii (smaller type of shield fern)

          Dryopteris Affinis (Cristata, the King)

          Dryopteris Remota (Scaly Buckler Fern)

          Pic below:

Have any pond lovers grown the above in water? Would love to know (or am I out on my own?) I suppose I'll soon know next summer when I'll have either empty burger bun trays under the water    or else a jungle sprouting skywards from the water.

kindredspirit, I don't think any one is ignoring you. (You asked the same question last month about the plants) Its just that although this is the water gardening section, it is quiet compared to the rest of the forum, and a lot of "no I haven't tried those plants" posts would be of no use.

I think its safe to say we are all waiting to see what happens with yours, since no one else on here has a lake that big.

Merry Christmas, and keep the updates coming
