That was interesting learning how the soapy water works as I never really understood the concept, albeit a very old remendy (I remember my uncle doing this in the late 50s). Thanks for the insight! [IMG]

Although as Frogesque says the EU is dragging it's heels, Neem is an ingredient in soaps and sprays which I find effective. I buy it in shampoo form which is excellent for the dogs and when I make soap spray for aphids. If anyone is interested this place does mail order:

    Excellent stuff! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

That's right. Most of 'em haven't got wings and those that have are feeble and get soggy from the hose. Plenty of creepy crawlies on the ground to gobble them up before they can stagger back to your roses. :D

I had a severe attack of blackfly on the blackcurrants and the leaves were so curled the hose couldn't get to the blackfly- the spray worked then, and hopefully birds etc would eat them on the ground....

we've been plagued with blackfly recently and some greenfly, and whitefly earlier in the season.

I tried leaving them to the ladybirds but there aren't any round here! Next year I am growing yarrow and coriander to encourage them.

I got an organic fatty acid sprat from B&Q which is very effective against the green and whitefly, but not that great on the blackfly.

I made my own special spray* with 1L water, 4 drops of citricidal (grapefruit seed extract - it's used as a disinfectant or food supplement, available from large chemists), and 2 drops eco washing up liquid to help it stick. Its highly effective, non-toxic to humans and animals, and degradable. It also works on fungal diseases.

    * its illegal to make your own pesticides, I prefer to call it a herbal remedy ;)
