Found this morning 2 gold finches traped in someones netting which was just thrown over the top of their cabbages to stop cabbage white, the netting wasn't tried down or helled up by canes etc, so the birds got inside and became tangled in the netting, as they were nexted to the road side i freed them

If just thrown in heap with loose folds, plastic netting can also entangle frogs, toads and snakes.

Jiffy, I have often been tempted to form a vigilante group to rampage through the neighbourhood collecting and destroying this awful - bloody awful netting.
You did so well saving the finches. I have often told the story of the hedgehog I tried to free from this dreadful stuff, and the sound of his screams will never leave me. I couldn`t save the leg that was severed by the netting, which had wrapped around the poor creature tighter and tighter in his panic. There was still some wrapped round him when he struggled free and disappeared into the night - with his mate. I never found him again, although I searched for weeks.....

The trouble is, this stuff does not disintegrate - it stays around to continue trapping and maiming animals and birds - like the plastic that kills life in the oceans.

Once, when walking in the Lake District we came across a sheep that was tangled up in barbed wire :hate-shocked:. One strand of the wire fence had, obviously, broken and must have got caught in the sheep's coat when it tried to eat some grass that was the other side of the fence - as they always seem to do  (the grass is always greener...).

The sheep was lying there with it wound about three times round its body. When we got close it started struggling and getting more wound up. I said that I would run/fast walk to the nearest farm (about 2 miles) but Mrs Shiney told me to wait. She crouched down level with the sheep, looked it in the eyes and put her hand on its head. It stopped struggling straight away and then she gradually unwound the wire (had to roll the sheep, gently, to do so).

When finished the sheep ran a few paces away and then started eating. We wound the strand around another strand and then walked to the farm to tell the farmer. His wife called him on his mobile and he came right back and asked as to show him where the broken wire was. :dbgrtmb:
