    Pete, if you cut a cross in the stork you will get 4 small cabbage. What you have to remember is that January King and Savoy, are types of winter cabbage. Spring cabbage would be something like Flower of Spring.

    Another useful brassica is Kohl Rabi, the turnip rooted cabbage. Can be cooked like swede or turnip. Or it can be served raw in salads. I used to peel it and eat it like an apple when I used to grow it. A very nice peppery taste.

    Kohlrabi is eaten a lot over here. It is very tasty in a white sauce with lots of parsley sprinkled over it. Or as David said, raw. I cut bits off to snack on when I am peeling them.

    They have the green or white and also the blue or purple kinds. They are the same, it is just the skin is a different colour. Nowadays, we usually just get the green ones up our way.

    I think that`s about the only one we can get over here, Kedi, It really should be used more here.

    David, the cross in the stem was something that I thought wasn't really nesessary, although we used to do it out of habit.
    Intesting that is not just an old wives tale then.

    No, it works. Another little tip, if you want to grow huge cabbages. When they are young, cut the stem half ways through, then add a match or something else, to hold the cut open. No bull, but when I used to do it, when the boys where young, one leaf would do four of us for one meal.

    Pete. Cutting a cross in the stem before cooking is to allow boiling water into the slowest part to cook. Even with sprouts which are small and only ever eaten once a year on Christmas Day by masochists, the stem is the 'woodiest' part and thus the slowest to cook. So, get the boiling water into it. It will cook quicker. I CAN cook (but hate washing machines). What is this rubbish about 4 cabbages? :D

    No lie, the outer leaves measured about 2ft by 18 inches.
