Joolz, I am not bothering this year as Steve ended up not smoking it except if he rubbed it in with his bought tobacco.

Hi folks hope you are all doing well tobacco seems to be taking up a lot of my time now but it is great fun i have 40 odd new strains growing this year, my contacts keep growing with seed now coming from the ars-grin and Transkarpatian seed banks through friends, i have also managed to obtain possibly the rarest tobacco in the world Perique tobacco growing in only one state world wide Louisiana boy this one was hard to get and be sure it was a pure strain, hope your growing season goes really well, here is a few pic,s of my plants 2 weeks ago.

Ive got seeds you can have derbyshire,pm me ur address and il pop em in the post,i think ive got about 5 varieties.
Just sprinkle them on top of damp compost,i gently sprayed to keep the compost moist and they are so tiny and delicate when they germinate, its hard to believe a seedling that frail looking could grow 5ft :hate-shocked:x
I lost all the leaves thou last yr to mould,i think i hung them too late:frown:

              Hi all,
I know this is a very old thread but I have just got interested in growing some tobacco plants next year and trying to find information from UK growers is at best difficult.
I live on the south derbyshire border and the weather at best is normally windy and cool.
I have bought some seeds from a UK grower (golden virginia) and also have some yellow twist bud.
I plan to start them next year in my heated propagator .
I only plan to grow 3 plants just to see if they will grow in my area.
I hope others are still watching this thread and would be very pleased for some replies.

              John

I bought 100 seeds off Amazon this year, none of them came up

Few years back, when Somerset was flooded, the slugs ate all the plants down to the ground, so not had much luck with it so far.

Welcome to Gardeners Corner btw :sign0016:

              Hi Zigs,
thanks for the welcome,I look forward to chatting with other tobacco growers in the UK.
A pity you have had no luck with your seeds germinating this year, perhaps they were bad seeds.
I bought some seeds from a UK grower a few weeks ago and as an experiment I planted a few in my heated propagator. Most of them have germinated although very small.
I have also just fitted a grow bulb to my lamp with the hope that it may boost the tiny plants on a bit.
I don,t expect much from them over the winter months but it is all a bit of experience for next year.
Anyway it is great to be part of a UK forum and hope others are still interested in growing tobacco plants in the UK.

              All the best

              John

I've still got a few left, think i'll try a germination test too, if they still don't come up then i'll get some more from somewhere else :)

Got to be worth a try Zigs.
I started mine on jiffy pellets in the heated propagator and a grow light.
I used an old coffee jar lid with a small amount of water in it so as to keep the pellets well wet until they germinated. The lid with the pellets was in my heated propagator.
No idea how they will progress but its got to be worth a go.
The golden virginia seeds came from a UK seller on ebay which came from last years plants so should be acclimatised to UK growing conditions.

The weather should still be pretty mild down there ,better than up here in the midlands.
I will be interested to see how you get on.
