Strikes me that tobacco grown from seed is as much likely to have Mosaic virus as is tomatoes.
In fact the potatoes are more likely to pass it on to the tobacco, rather than the other way round.:)

I would think the side shoots would root and be over wintered, but is it worth it? Just get him to save you some seeds for next spring.

I would never encourage any one to smoke. It's a dreadful addiction which I started years before any health warnings. I'm 67 and my lungs are fine at the moment, but thanks for the concern. Of course I could die at any moment - but so could you.

At least smoking my own tobacco saves me from all the harmful additives commercial tobacco companies add.

moyra it's too late for me to give up. It's all I live for these days. I know quite a lot of ex-smokers whose health has deteriorated since giving up.

Some say it can do be harm than good to deny an addicted body its fix.

I am 66 so there's not much in our ages. Obviously I wouldn't start again now but I have to admit I still miss my smokes.

oldhag, I find it very sad that smoking is all you live for. You've joined our gardening forum, so you must have some interest in gardening too?

Lets put it this way then - my life would be miserable without my fags. I wouldn't want anyone crying over me.

Tobacco IS gardening! But yes I grow lots of other stuff too.

Just had a look at your album, you have a nice garden oldhag :) The tobacco plants actually look quite exotic grown massed together like that. I'm growing nicotiana sylvestris (Wild tobacco) which has the most wonderful scented flowers and some dwarf bedding tobacco, again for the fragrance.

Oh and I see a cabbage palm (Cordyline), is that this year? It must have survived the terrible winter, lots have been lost down south and I thought nearly all up in scotland.

                Here you are itman -

GOLDEN VIRGINIA TOBACCO SEEDS | eBay

JWK - The Cordyline did get killed this winter, very sad about that. Nicotiana Sylvestris, yes I've got three of those on a South facing wall which have survived the last two winters. I didn't even know they were perennial! They are very similar to tobacco plants, almost as tall, big leaves but with white flowers instead of the pink of Tobacciana.
