Try Dill too. Dill and corriander are my staple salad additions in the summer. All grown from seed, outside without covers and being eaten now in mild Norfolk

From trial and error I have concluded a few things about herbs, and in my experience rosemary, bay, oregano, lemon balm, marjoram, chives and curry plant all like good drainage, are not bothered by soil type and appreciate full sun. Parsley and mint are better in a pot because (as previously mentioned) they have quite invasive root systems. I have a 12 inch terracotta pot with mint, parsley and thyme in. I keep it by the front door, which is north-facing and not in full sun. I water it only in very dry periods and just replace the top inch or so of compost every spring - it's now in it's third year and the plants are still good and healthy.
Basil seems best on a sunny windowsill, but don't water it until the compost is very dry and then sparingly, it just won't tolerate it as I've found out.#
I'm trying bronze fennel this year, and (fingers crossed) it's doing well at the moment.
The one thing I still can't get right is bloody tarragon!

#I have to report the untimely demise of several brave basil plants during the research associated with this post.

I also grow herbs in my garden - I simply love to use them for cooking. You can also make teas out of some.

I grow rosemary, sage, chives, basil, oregano, majoram and lemon balm :-)

also Pennyroyal, which is a type of mint, I THNK!!
Lavender - LOTS of lavender!! You can cook with lavender.....and anyway it smells so good.
Orange scented thyme - this is heavenly, such a delicate scent, and little white flowers.
    Bay tree.
    Pineapple Sage.
    Blackcurrant sage.
Garlic chives. (Have to get some more of those, actually).
