Walnut are they likely to spread and overtake the garden?

FANCY, no they won't but they do get big. I grow most of mine quite happily in pots above and below ground. I use huge B&Q storage tubs, dig a big hole and sink them in. Others I have dug proper lined bog/ponds. I think you have seen my sealed oak tub by the front door which holds a good size gunnera.

My gunnera has survived about -12C with no signs of damage. I chuck the leaves on top and weigh them down with a few old bricks so they don't go everywhere. Just how hardy are they?

We get temperatures as low as minus 12 over here at times. My Gunnera has survived quite happily. All I do now is to cut down the leaves and lay them on top of the crown (spiking them on shortened stems)
They DO get massive though. Mine now reaches as high as about 15 feet [IMG]

    Oh what a BIG one!!!

I am told that when they get their roots going that they survive colder conditions and that it is the first few years that are the most vulnerable, so I have covered mine as BM suggests.

Amazing picture - I live in hope!

oh my!!!what a wonderful sight, specially when its raining and you need to shelter from the rain. I can imagine myself walking around the garden with one of the leaves over my head. I think I will treat myself to one of those.ha.
