Usual way, in wood, if you only want/need the bend in one plane, ie. no turning round corners is to bandsaw it out of a solid block, you then put in handrail bolts from the under side along with a couple of dowels to join it to the straight sections.
It will of course need to be shaped to the section that you have chosen for the straits.

Thanks @hoofy I already have a decking platform similar to yours at the side of my house, I installed 12+ years ago. I used a very cheap Wickes handrail product which has been OK. It hardly gets any sun so goes green over winter but has remained solid and functional. The new step and ramp areas are in the shade all day, so I am leaning towards stainless steel now.

Interesting how they make bends out of a solid block, it would need bending in two planes. I thought wood could be bent in a steam press bit by bit ?

I just explained over lunch what people are suggesting on here and Mrs JWK is telling me it must be stainless steel now, to match the new exterior lights, so thanks anyway.

@gks - I like this idea, I hadn't thought about fabricators. Just googled and there are some around here, with photos of handrails on their websites. I will call them on Monday. If I could get the job done for around £1000 I would be happy and it would look much nicer with smooth radiuses and no visible joints.

When the rain stops I will try this method, rather than making a prototype out of battening.

Well I thought you would end up with S/S its the modern material.

Just out of interest, this is how we used to do it in wood, just a few steps worth.

@pete would I be correct in thinking you used a Spindle Moulder to finish shaping those after sawing?

Well spindle moulder only up to a point as usually the twists and turns are too tight , so quite a lot is done by hand and alot by eye really, if it looks right it usually is, you can tell straight away if it doesn't look right.

Yes John it was the last one I made back in 2011, just a small piece for a private house, the companies I worked for after that didn't take on that kind of work because it was too time consuming to make a profit.
The company I worked for back in the 80 and 90s did do a lot of that kind of thing and we did all kinds of handrail, in lots of places, mostly large government buildings in London.

Yes @CanadianLori the steps will be the main way to access our house, through this wrought iron gate (recent photo):

I don't know if this old photo helps when the front garden was being dug out, there is a sloped driveway as well :

They look great. I've never tried making any but have seen a couple of attempts in houses that were woeful. Some of the turns where the handrail turns in plan and elevation look like real pigs to make.
