I've had the exact opposite problem. I rent my place so really don't have permission to do any gardening other than "general upkeep" (I have decided to ignore that rule as the landlord fails to uphold his duty to maintain anything).

There used to be a huge Leylandii "hedge" (about 30 ft tall). A neighbour a few doors down (not even the next door neighbour) asked repeatedly that I cut it down. I politely told him I can't and referred him to my landlord, who chose to ignore him (surprise surprise). In the end I got someone to help me and we cut it all down to a reasonable height. The neighbour came to thank us, which we graciously accepted, but all the while I was thinking we didn't do it for him, we did it because I hated the "hedge".

Rather amusingly though, one time when I was having a bonfire to burn off the now thoroughly dried cuttings, and the smoke was blowing AWAY from the houses, the moody neighbours got upset and made a great show of shutting their back window. I heard it slam shut the first time but just carried on, so they opened the window again and slammed it shut a bit harder to make sure I heard. Again I just ignored them and again they opened and then slammed shut the window. There were several rounds of this and I realised they were trying to get me to look over but I just pretended not to hear. What I was waiting for was for them to slam the window a bit too hard and bust it, but alas it never happened.

Oh I will happily harrass any tall blond gardener with a six pack and a tendency to trim hedges in his shorts, but you don't often meet those, alas.

I avoided gardening quarrels with neighbours so far only at the price of much knukles gnawing on my part and much head scratching on part of the neighbours. i am an eccentric I guess and peaceful cohabitation requires tolerance on all parts involved, but then, I am a very peaceful neighbour, and tolerably nice if not crossed. :D

We can but dream, I had a neighbour in my old house who had a son who I first met when he was coming home from school. The next time I noticed him was years later when at 19 yrs old he was washing his first car on the driveway wearing a baggy white t-shirt and light brown canvas shorts. All wet and soapy. It was on that day I officially graduated into a lech!

Very civilised in Poole dear, when I walk my dogs along the cycle track/lane I hold the dogs to one side to let cyclists pass, I always get a smile and thank you.

Well said. It's much better to live peaceably with your neighbours, if possible. We moved into our current home two and a half years ago. We have keen gardeners on both sides and across the road. They are all lovely folk. They appreciate bowls of raspberries, tom's and beans when we have a glut and we get walnuts from another neighbour. We all have a BBQ once a year and often have each other over for meals. We have never lived in such a friendly place before.

    Hi Stony,

I think we should start our own estate agency-that way we can all live near someone like you and yours.

its pretty easy round here, in fact, since we have moved in the houses around us have done up their gardens and so a few of us often have a chat in the front whilst gardening. The old lady next door is a pain in the ass, and always complains when we get the chap round to cut the hedge (its her hedge but she doesnt get it cut so we had no sunlight in our garden at all when we moved in and now get it chopped twice a year (its still over 6 foot high though) and she complains to us when we have a bbq, but I weed her garden once a month to try and keep her a bit happy and stop the nagging getting too bad lol.
