Thanks Pete - typical Kent weather I think you mean.
Some of us have had Blizzards, Gales, Floods, Hail, Frosts - even an Earthquake.
The only thing in short supply has been Sun. - wanna swap??

hard to explain, but here goes:

cut a piece of flat polystyrene in a diamond shape (approx 2 1/2 inches long and 1 inch wide and 1/4 inch thick , but make one side twice as long as the other ...

get some fresh calamari/squid ... and some fresh sardine or mackrel

make a trace with a 5/0 hook and place the hook above the polystrene diamond and wrap ghost cotton around the hook/polystrene diamond to secure to the hook

cut a fillet of mackrel (best is from the belly and pace it through the hook) ... flesh side up

cut a strip of calamari approx 2 inches wide and 3-4 inches long .... remove the outer skin and bash the fleshy side (inside) with a meat hammer (the thingy you use to flatten steak)

take your knife and cut through the calamari to form little tails (at the bottom of the calamari fillet, cut a few times with your knide to form little 'tails' about 1/4 inch long

place the calamari strip on the hook with the little tails at the bottom and wrap the calamari around the sardine/mackrel fillet (that is, wrap the calamari around the fillet of fish with the tails at the bottom and the bashed fleshy side ontop)

    use ghost cotton to secure

so basically, you are making a trace using polystrene to keep the bait off the seabed, the mackrel/sardine in the middle, and the calamari with little tails flapping in the water to attract the fish

add a 5/0 sinker to your trace (if no rocks, use a barrel type sinker) ....

read the sea (even in the wind) and cast onto a sandbank near the deep .... this has never ever failed me , and I used to fish competition... and lived meters away from the sea

you most prob don't have a clue what I am trying to explain, as it's difficult to understand without seeing photos, but will one day make a trace with this method (step by step) and post pics on this forum

if there are fish, and you use this method with this bait, you will have a very high probaility of catching something, even in heavy wind ... this is what was used to check/feel what fish were in the area

works well for deep sea fishing (from a boat) aswell

The Councils were required to stock up on more Grit for the winter, following the debacle of the last 2 years.
Presumably they are now wandering around the County wondering where the hell they can keep it!

not sure what's tardis ... I use normal polystrene with small molecules like they use in packing speakers or electronics etc ...

the small molecule polystyrene cuts better, but any will do ... the sole function of the polystrene is to keep the bait straight (and attractive to fish), and to to lift it off the seabed (it floats, but the sinker will keep it near the bottom) ... the little tails that you cut in the calamari vibrate in the moving water, attracting fish

there's loads more 'tricks' but this one is the one I always start with when unsure of what fish are around

suppose UK fishing is a bit different as there are different species of fish, but if I were to go sea fishing, I'd start with this combination first to test the waters

That is exactly what I have been trying to say, he just put it a lot better than I could.

We are still in an ice age, its not over yet. There have been longer and warmer interglacial periods than this one. The trouble is, at the beginning of this interglacial period 10,000 years ago there were probably only 1-2 million humans on the planet, who could migrate to avoid the ice sheets.

Where do 7,000,000,000 humans run to ?

Thanks for the reminder to pick up a couple of extra bags of dishwasher salt to use on the paths if we get more snow this year. Keeps them ice-free & squeeky clean !
