@groundbeetle I agree some roses are prone to diseases. I've found it tends to be the older generation of roses as later ones are grown to be more resistant. I had an assortment of roses in my last garden and the only one that seemed to suffer from black spot (late in the flowering season) was of the older generation, a red floribunda rose named 'Rob Roy' below....

My Purple Climber from Poundland opened its first flower today.

I have no idea what it is, and am hoping somebody knows.

Not Veilchenbleu, and maybe an actual climber rather than rambler. With roses this beautiful that is secondary though.

It is definitely a climber, has been climbing up a support. I love the colour, and it is a single flower which I am delighted about as it will help the bees and pollinators, and hold up well. I couldn't have found a climbing rose I am happier with if I had paid top prices from an online nursery, in fact I was searching for single and semi-double roses and didn't see this one anywhere.

Thanks for identifying it. Yes I think it is a Rosa rugosa, so not a climber at all, but I might be able to persuade it to climb a bit. The flower produced loads of pollen, which my other roses don't seem to do. Maybe I can create a hybrid using its pollen with a climber, to get a climber with some of the good qualities of the Rosa rugosa, such as beautiful colour, beautiful flower, single petalled, scent and hardiness.

Most places seem to agree of a height of 1.5M , though like any plant if given the right conditions soil/compost and feed it may well grow even taller in a season or two.

Not a big rose grower but generally find if a rose is weak to start with they need two or three years to get really established and flowering well.

X Pollinating your own Roses , yes possible, if you have that many years left, not an option for us !

Much better to buy a quality Rose that has the characteristics you need and should be able to enjoy it the same or following year, though this time of year you are really looking at November onwards for buying and planting.

If it's a Rugosa it will have thorns like these below.

It does have thorns like those in your photograph. It is definitely a Rugosa. A deep magenta purple.

This is my pound shop bought rose. Infact it was 89p and had been sprayed in glitter. It did nothing last year but this year has flowered beautifully.

I purchased a total of 8 Poundland "roses",a few months ago.4 were no more than dead sticks,2 were suckers and only 2 authentic roses, although not as advertised.
I informed Poundland about this, but they did not seem interested in sorting out the poor supply source of these plants.
I made sure I got a refund for these 6 plants
