Not sure if this counts, but my big Frits (F.imperialis "Rubra" and F.persica) have got through the winter and poked their heads up. Too damned soon really bearing in mind the weather:help:

F imperialis is pretty frost hardy, and I guess the rest are also.

Lost all but one of my F.persica to rot last spring when it turned wet and cold. This is the first time that I've grown F.imperialis though............

I think the top growth is very hardy frost wise.
      Underground is a different proposition.
I find slugs eating the bulbs is my main problem

I'm not sure Jools, but I think certain species of slugs actually live underground most of the time.
They say, plant the bulbs surrounded by sharp sand, slugs dont like grit.

I showed this to my missus. She laughed and agreed then said 'I know, I've been dumped'. To which I replied, 'No, don't be silly. You're still in my top ten':sofa:

                Top ten! She's doing well!

Last night T'other half said "put a DVD on", but got the hump when I put the Fabulous Baker Boys in. She reckons I have a thing for Michelle Pfeiffer!
Must admit that the though of Makin' Whoopee with Michelle Pfeiffer was nice!

The black slugs live underground. From what I remember, they usually go to about 2" - 3". If you're having a lot of trouble you can get the anti-slug nematodes.

Mine should be safe then as the tops are 20cm (8"?) down!

Although we haven't done anything this year yet there are a few things doing OK. The onions and garlic that we planted at the end of the autumn have survived and the rhubarb is begining to look fairly happy.

We did a bit of weeding towards the end of the year but we really need to get going again now.

As you can see, the surface of the ground is pretty dry now. We've had no rain since the snow and very little rain since Christmas.
