I have been planting out cyclamen corms today, and I researched first and read that squirrels are partial to them, so I've put some chicken wire on top before covering with earth. Last year I tied garden netting over the top of any pots with tulips in them.

Thank you for that. Mrs Lao tells me that she read somewhere that a good idea is to plant just before rain; the water, as it penetrates, takes the smell down and away from the offending noses and teeth! Have you heard of this?

It's generally just the smaller bulbs that squirrerls will get, because they only dig down so far. The 'usual' tulip bulbs should be planted deep enough to prevent them getting those - if they've been planted correctly.

Chicken wire is useful, and I've also use black netting on pots that have smaller bulbs of any kind - crocus, species tulips etc, for that reason. If you add a piece of neatly tied string to hold it in place, it can be quite decorative, rather than ugly. Much more attractive than chicken wire.

I’ve planted in pots and in the garden. Those in the garden have an old fire guard pegged down over them to stop the little grey ****** digging them out. Those in pots are nearer the house and aren’t usually a problem.

Haven't heard of that @LawnAndOrder . There was a squirrel in the garden this morning, he (?) sat on the top of a big pot of tulips that l hadn't yet protected. (There is a layer of grit on the top).
To say I was holding my breath is an understatement. Maybe he was casing the joint .
