It was the cables work but they would need to be replaced at some point. But the original issue was that you would start it and then it would cut out. I may see if another company could look at it as I can imagine the bill they want to charge is massive.

So I’ve spoken to them on the phone. They said that to replace 3 cables both belts and a grass deflector inc service and delivery £360!

The crank they said is bent and has took an impact at some point. It must have been some impact as they’ve got it running but it vibrating a lot.

So I’ve paid the £55 for the inspection and delivery.

I'm not sure how you would bend a crank shaft without smashing the crank casing. Unless on a mower the crank shaft doubles as direct drive for the cutting blade?

I am not too sure tbh. I may see what condition it comes back in. As I’m contemplating selling it.

I will see if I can get hold of the cables myself and the grass deflector. I may see if it’s running and get someone to replace the belts as they had been replaced but they were the wrong ones.

I had a Hayter some years ago and it also had running problems - from new. It would never start from warm/hot either. I'd never have another one.

That's a lot of money! I don't see how they can justify that. It's cheaper to buy a new mower.

It sometimes pays to buy a cheaper mower if your lawns aren't very big, as they're not under too much stress. I have a Husqvarna at the moment and apart from initial running problems for the first couple of years mowing on a side slope, I'm happy with it. It's settled down as it's got older and is now 5 years old.

You can bend the crank on a
Lawnmowers hitting things like tree stumps , I once hit a sawn off washing pole with the John deere bent the crank vibratied like crazy new engine required, you can get them striaigtened but they are still not quite the same

I get it back Wednesday so I’ll see what state it’s in. It’s a cracking mower and a do love the stripes it puts down. They seem to be going for an okay price on eBay. Even if I got my money back I would be pleased.

Was the machine vibrating before they took it in?

I've always had Hayters and found them good. I use mine (Hayter 56) 3 - 4 hours a week in the main growing season and 1 -2 hours during the winter. The last Hayter I had for about 26 years with little trouble at all and it has been going ever since (3 years) being used by a professional gardener. I gave it to him as I can't always use the pull start on it and the new one is electric start.

Re hitting stumps:- we have a lot of trees where the roots start growing above the surface. I keep an eye out for them and when they start to become a hazard it gets sliced down to ground level. We use a sharp hand axe and slice it parallel to the ground.

Youtube videos usually give answers to all mower problems. As said above try the carb. And by the way run it on superunleaded only. Saves future problems.

Good point weetam, I have had cutting out and stuttering problems with my old car using E10. Drained and filled with E5 cured the problem.
