Hi Cagney could,nt agree with you more,I have at the moment A Cannon 350D DSLR, with Cannon lens 28mm x 90mm- 90mm x300mm - Cannon A590is and a Fuji S8000fd 18x zoom about 430mm 35mm equivalent and wait for it a Pentax ME Super 35mm film.
I use the Cannon DSLR for my wildlife shots and yes point and shoot for most other shots Yes Guilty as charged:D But it is so much easier to get those unexpected shots:thumb:

    HDR cheating.
OK, heres the story. First picture is a single jpeg.
I opened up PS and increased the brillance and +10 and saved +20 then saved
then decreased -10 and saved and then -20 and saved.
    I then have 5 images.
all loaded into HDR and minor adjustments made.
To me it seemed like a good starter to get the hang of this HDR process until I can get out there and start bracketing.
This second picture is the HDR process.
Your comments, positive or negative. would be welcome.
Give it to me as it seems. I can take it, and then I send the boys in black around to your place...

I really don´t think you need expensive cameras or software for taking decent pics. What you need is the EYE, and if you don´t have that a million dollar camera in cast gold will serve you nothing.

As for the comparison between painting and digital photography, I think all the software for enhancing and editing pics we have today has actually brought photography a lot closer to painting. The medium may be entirely different but the spirit is very similar. When painting you have a freedom that photography as such has not. You are not so much bound to the subject, and you can more easily pursue your own vision. I think both "pure" and enhanced photography have a place. They are different mediums, often addressing different needs.

That said there is as much bad photography and bad editing as bad painting.

    The EYE, again.

I think I am finally starting to understand the HDR process.
This is processed from x3 images.
    Comments please.

    Edit:
Umm now I look at that image presented here it has lost a lot of detail.
I am using my laptop at the moment and cannot use Tiff imagesx16.
I shall have to fire up the beast (Desk top) and go thru this process again.
It is a learning process after all

    Hi Robert
I loved the bee photo - nice detail, though I wonder if you'd used flash you might have got a bit more details in the darker parts around the bee's head. I don't know your camera, but using 'spot' metering if available might have been another option.
Yes you have lost detail in the landscape and I'm not sure if it really was a candidate for HDR - you could probably have achieved better by a bit of tweaking in Photoshop.

    Like the flower though.

HDR on your street scene has improved the sky, though I'm unsure about what else it has done. My main suggestion here would be to get rid of the car that someone had the gall to park in the foreground. Get it towed away, clone it out or revisit the scene early on a Sunday morning:D

Just a very quick and rather untidy 'fix' >

    Vero!

I've said it before on here - the most important software behind a good photograph is the software BEHIND the lens:D
However a camera that affords the user a decent amount of control over speed and aperture can if used properly allow the user to take successful photographs under a wider range of conditions.

    Ok...well you did ask mate.

I don't like the recent photo above....too contrived. Also not a good shot either.

Going back to the street scene...I also do not like what you have done with it...much prefer the original...just a pity that the white buildings are devoid of texture and depth, probably too bright at the time you took it yea?

    Shall I get my coat....;)

    Thanks for comments. honest.
The street scene in York was taken with the full sun on the buildings and the real colour is white! An exposure nightmare..
You are correct about lack of texture and depth on the buildings. I would reckon a different time of day would benefit but it could be that they are in full sun only for a short period during the day.
This could be a future project...
That was the reason why I bracketed and the HDR came along later.

The sky shot was snatched from my front door. Moments later the scene changed and the moment was gone.
The EV 0.0 shot exposes nicely for the sky with the buildings very dark. So, once again it seemed like a good HDR exercise opportunity.
    Nothing more.
    Many thanks for coments.
Oh yes. your coat has gone to the local Oxfam.....
