Hedgehog numbers have declined by a third in the last 10 years, they need all the help they can get.

I drove past a baby hog in December who was out in the daylight but it was very difficult to stop safely. I went back later to see if I could find it, without any luck. I was gutted, I feel like I condemned it to death :cry3:

I have my name on the waiting list with the local animal rescue centre as my garden is safe enough to take on an injured or disabled hedgy. I will never drive past a distressed one again, I'll feed it up myself if I have to.

Thank you for the comments

re feeding stations, as well as laundry baskets I find a plastic storage tub ( the under the bed type ) works very well. I cut a hole in the one end and then make a tunnel with a bend in it out of bricks and place the box opening against the tunnel opening. I put a piece of slate over the top of the brick tunnel as a roof and weight box and slate with more bricks. Food stays dry and cats cannot get around the bend.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask - if I don't know the answer I know others who will.

Talking about hog houses ..... I set one up today using a plastic storage box. I shall be interested to see if any hoggies like the idea of it. And, whilst I think it will be fine for the summer months I'm not really convinced about its validity for hibernating in. A couple of other people have said they have had hogs hibernate in these plastic boxes quite successfully. Have to see how we get on over the summer months first.

I would be worried with plastic over winter that the frost etc would be able to penetrate inside

Glad we have you on here it what GC needed .

                  Thank you

My concern as well. Also, build up of condensation. Having said that hogs do build very amazing hibernaculums, which seem to prevent frost/damp penetrating. I added extra ventilation holes to the ' house ' I made. I think it will work as a summer residence but I am somewhat reluctant to leave it there for winter use..

we built our Hodgy a house in the shed last autumn, just a wooden box in the corner of the shed with a lil door cut in the shed wall so he can come and go, i thought we'd have to show it to him as was sure he'd never find it on his own but i needn't have worried as within a week of building it he had found it and taken it as his own :imphrt:
