Certainly wouldn't be a problem for me to have a N or NE facing garden ! There are hundreds of plants which will thrive in slightly cooler and shadier conditions .
A lot of our garden plants tolerate full sunshine , but a great many seem 'happier' in partial shade . ( I know how they feel) !

Welcome @DW36. I sympathise with you on the builders rubble. We are in an old house but have had various work done that has brought up the subsoil and I am forever finding bits of broken glass and trash where I least want it. One memorable incident was working fertiliser into the raspberry patch and cutting my finger open . You will get there. A soil seive helps, as does carrying around a bin bucket when you are working in the garden and tossing out any rubbish straight away, otherwise it just tends to get moved around.

            Looking forward to your pics.
