Formerly Peter Pan's Playground? Sorry, I'm past the age of needing thrilling rides, especially when they're 600 miles away.

Yes I well remember Southend on mud.....ooops sorry. On sea. As a kid at the end of the war. Mum would get me ready and off we'd go. Tram down from Woolwich Common to the ferry. Cross the ferry to North Woolwich. Then the 101 bus to East Ham rail station. Then that train ride. Kids will be kids, head out of the window, mum saying now look at you. The smuts from the steam engine. Out would come her hankie, a bit of her spit and then a polish of my face. I always hated that. Once at the seaside and it stank of salty seaweed and fish. For a kid. The world had gone mad. For us. None of this fast merrygorounds etc. Perhaps a few pennies in the slot machines. Then time to go home. Those were the days.

Now folk go abroad and try to change the colour of their skin. That day out in South end, to kids like me was magic.

Marvelous memories Mike. I come from Kent originally and I can remember coming here on the ferry. It probably still smells the same, I still love that seasidey smell, and I love a bit of beach combing.:)

Welcome to GC, mikes post about the smell brings back memories, I was originally from Ramsgate, the summer smell of candyfloss and donuts, kiss me quick hats and saucy post cards, by day, puddles of puke and piddle around the passed out drunk person, and the dawn chorous of a million gulls, and the scent of urine as you walk past an alley, those were the days.

I think it’s probably like that here now Cuttings. I don’t often venture to ‘that bit’ of Southend, driving past is enough.
