I attribute my enjoyment of gardening to my late Grandad. When you have one like mine, who'd have to be physically dragged into the house or he'd happily spend the night out there, you'd do well not to catch the bug. In fact the only things that would keep him out of the garden were lunch, dinner, Gardeners' World and the World Snooker Championships.

Slowly but surely, my Dad is coming on board and after a little persuasion we're waiting for our first greenhouse to be delivered. In the meantime, we're in our first foray into growing from seed, since the sunflower filled summers of my childhood, with a couple of cheap and cheerful propagators on the windowsill. Had a decent haul of pansies and more begonias than a garden centre would know what to do with (apparently when I thought none were coming out of the packet, I was very much mistaken!)

Between my Dad's on/off interest in getting his fingers green and Tara the dog, the back garden has very much been designed with low maintenance in mind. But, with a couple of flower beds that we (touch wood) finished the design of towards the end of last year with the purchase of our second rose and completing the buxus border.

(believe it or not, the bricks on the right of that first picture was a wall, which just so happened to be buried an inch below the surface and exactly where we wanted our second rose to go!)
