Good call! One of the last 'proper' Volvo's before Ford ruined everything; hard as nails in more than one way, comfy, reliable, and capable of carrying a small village in the back (almost).

Downside is high parts prices, but then they hardly ever need them, so thats no big problem.

The expensive parts are only if you go to a Volvo dealer or buy genuine Volvo branded parts. I can see why some people would choose that option, but to be honest after market but legit copies are usually perfectly adequate, and in any case apart from consumables and front brake calipers (the latter known to become sticky ocassionally), they don't really go wrong.

I would have gone for the Citreon Berlingo (although they seemed a little shy about disclosing the mileage and the sunroof is a hassle that is not needed). It's old school in terms of electronics, mechanically tough (far better bet than a Renoult IMO) and fairly pleasant to drive. Added advantage is that major components (engines and g/boxes) if ever needed are interchangeable with a fair few models in the PSA range so readily available used.
Clueless must have driven some nails (no offence intended), as Peugeot/Citreon gearchanges are generally good - indeed, I rarely use the clutch in our car or the works van when changing gear.
Avoid any Japanese imports, Fiats, old Ford diesels, high mileage VW/Skoda PD diesels (I've replaced heads on seven and scrapped three this year owing to injector movement) and anything with warning lights on (especially when the seller tells you that the part to fix it is really cheap).

Fair enough Kaz - they aren't to everyone's taste. What about the CR-V?

and I agree with him . I wouldn't trust anything on e-bay. It's because they cannot sell it elsewhere.

Do you have any local independent garages or car dealers nearby that have a decent reputation? Might be worth an ask to see what they can get you?

Alternatively, do you know anyone into cars that would go to an auction for you? You might get a bit more for your money?

Its a difficult one Kaz, especially as you are trying to make the purchase locally. I'm doing now't today but wearing my bum out on the sofa, so I'll have a potter round on the net and see if I can find anything that looks interesting.
