Thanks @Zigs and @shiney. The fleece is quite good quality so should stand up to it. Where the Caulis and Broccoli are going is where an old greenhouse was, between a substantial Beech hedge and the stables so it's reasonably sheltered. Pigeons landing on it:yikes:. Well that's another scenario altogether. Doubt the pea netting would stand a chance either with the ones we have being of the LARGE variety. They don't often come into the garden tending to stay around the small wood BUT I haven't grown Caulis and Broccoli before. I wonder if the have a homing device for Brassicas:heehee:. Right "proof of the pudding" and all that. I have ordered some of the connectors you kindly suggested shiney. I'm going to use the fleece and see how I get on. It's a lot easier to deal with and hopefully I won't have to deal with trapped birds.

Me AGAIN, all these questions! Re carpet, would it work as well if I cut slits in membrane and put that down? I had sort of planned to membrane the whole bed to reduce weeding so hope it would work the same? the membrane I have is very very tough, I certainly can't pull it apart. It's a bu..er for fraying but wouldn't need to cut too many slits in it.

A huge :ThankYou: to all the above who gave me such good advice. I am chuffed to bits as both my Broccoli and even more surprising Cauliflowers are going great guns. I've already harvested some stonking heads of Broccoli and the Cauliflowers are all going to have decent heads. I'd never have had such great results without your advice knowing b all about what to do with them as this is my 1st attempt at growing them. I'd read that Cauliflowers were very difficult? well either I did plenty right or beginners luck.....no doubt the latter:snorky:. The only "snag" is that they take up such huge amounts of room in the veg bed. I was generous with their spacing but even so their huge leaves are overlapping each other. I've a feeling that the success could be down to the expensive grass cutting machine (horse) who's by product was liberally dug in over the growing area?
I know you will get smaller Broccoli heads from side shoots after the main head is removed. I'm presuming once the Cauliflower is harvested the rest of the plant might as well be dug up?

Yes Broccoli will come again but Caulis are a one off and should be pulled up.
